How was the trip? How'd M do? We're planning on going up to Plymouth/Boston in May or June so my family up there can meet the baby. So he'll be pretty close to the age M is now.

  • He did really well! I highly recommend the JetBlue nonstop. You'll pay a little extra for that, but it's only 2.5 hours and I think that really helps. I brought a bottle for takeoff in case that helped his ears and waited until we were right about to take off to give it to him. He didn't seem to have any trouble, and when he did occasionally grab his ear, I'd just give him a swig and it seemed to help. I used paci clips to attach a couple of toys to his shirt, but generally he was completely fascinated by the seat-back TVs and didn't need much else entertainment. Not that he was watching--he wanted to be held up to them so he could swat them. Tiring, but hey. lol

I borrowed an umbrella stroller from JenC and that was nice and lightweight to get him around the airport. A Bjorn would have worked as well, but then we'd need to switch off to go to the bathroom.

Also I had a thermos and cup to help heat his bottle up. Since you're traveling with an infant, technically you can bring water through for their bottle, but it has to go through testing. So instead I just went through security and got hot water at Starbucks on the other side to store in the thermos until we were settled on the plane. That worked really well.

The real challenge was finding suitable places to nap at each person's house. If they already had a pnp, that was the best solution. But a lot of people didn't, and I'd end up rocking him for a half hour or taking him on a long walk in the stroller just to get him to rest for a bit. And everyone is really respectful of a sleeping baby... for the first 5 minutes. Then they forget and talk loudly and bang around and whatever. It would be a pain, but I might suggest just taking a pnp everywhere you go, or one of those little pop out travel beds (peapod?) on Amazon, and set it up in the darkest bedroom of the house so you can whisk him off to naptime when he's ready. I took our monitor also, so I didn't have to keep checking on him. Oh, and if you have him trained to fall asleep to music, be sure and bring that item. I brought the seahorse and that traveled well to each place.
