Austin Recs

Hi all!  My husband and I are coming to Austin next Wednesday-Saturday from Houston to just get out of town for a few days.  We have a couple things in mind that we want to do while in the area (Schillterbahn & Esther Follie's) but other than that I've got nothing!

Are there any hole in the wall places you love or places that have good happy hours during the week?  We aren't picky at all and are open to anything.  We want to have one nice dinner while we're in town so any suggestions on that are appreciated as well.  We'll be staying downtown but are not opposed to driving for a great meal.  TIA! :)

Re: Austin Recs

  • Wink is a great place for a nice dinner.  It's close to downtown, but still a little bit of a hole in the wall (in that it's tucked in to the back of a strip center).

If you really want an out of the way place for drinks, check out Dry Creek Cafe.  It's on Mt. Bonnell, and it's like a two-story shack that serves maybe 3 different kinds of beer.  I think they're only open during happy hour, actually.

ETA: If you're looking for additional activities, you might enjoy walking around the South Congress area.  There are a bunch of quirky stores and restaurants, including several food trailers.  (Mighty Cone, yum!)  Home Slice is good on S. Congress for pizza, and there's a Hey Cupcake trailer, too.
