New house, new garden

Hi everyone! My husband and I just bought our first house together and moved in about a month ago. We LOVE our new house and also love that it came with apple, pear, and cherry trees, a Concord grape vine, raspberry bushes and the previous owner had already started us off with tomato, cucumber, squash and sunflower seedlings. I grew up in a more city-like setting and have NO idea what I am doing with this new garden. So far, I have just been pulling weeds that I see and watering. Do I need to do anything else (chemicals?).

We also have an asparagus field that has finished growing for this season. Does anyone know if I just let the rest of the stalks grow? or do I chop them down? Thanks for all your help!

Re: New house, new garden

  • Welcome.  Wow you are so luck to get all of that with your new house!  Asparagus takes 3 years of un-inhibited growth before you can harvest it.  Do you know when they planted it?  I'm not sure about the fruit trees but you shouldn't need anything else for the raspberries, veggies, or asparagus.  If the asparagus is mature you should try to catch the new stalks before they start to flower to eat.  If you miss them and they are already flowering leave them alone until next year.

  • Thanks for the awesome advice! Yeah, they had started the asparagus field about 10 years ago, so when we first moved in, we picked a few to eat, but now it is all flowering. We are really excited to become gardeners- people have been telling me that I need to learn how to can now!
