Anyone potty training right now?

And want to commiserate lol? We have been toying with potty training all summer but have been lazy about it. Pretty much we have had Ella in pull ups and encouraging her to use the potty which she does about 75% of the time but we haven't pushed it at all. I would really like her to be trained by the end of the summer when I go back to work so this week we decided to bite the bullet and go full force. She has been in underwear all day yesterday and today. We have been putting her on the potty once an hour at least and more frequently if she looks suspicious :) She has been doing okay. Yesterday two potty accidents and one poop. Today one potty accident and two poops. Poop seems to be an issue- she is kind of sneaky about going and doesn't like going on the potty much. Any suggestions for this? Also, I can't get her to really tell me she needs to go. She goes when I take her but doesn't volunteer herself. Does this just come with time?

Re: Anyone potty training right now?

  • I am SO annoyed with myself for not following DS's lead. Around 12 months he started to show interest in the toilet so we bought a little potty for the bathroom. He would actually use it when we put him on it. But we got lax - it was too early to train right?

NOW he doesn't want to potty train. I bought big boy Cars underwear, a Thomas toilet seat and step stool, a box of Cars stickers as reward. He was mildly excited about it. For two days, he pees all over the house. We went to the toilet every 20 minutes - he sit there - talk about going potty - not go. Then go on the floor/in his underwear. It didn't bother him that he was wet.

So we stopped (that was last week). So interestingly, starting yesterday he is telling me that he IS or is GOING TO go poop. He won't go to the toilet but he is telling me. I take that as a good sign. We'll keep talking about it and maybe try again soon.

I bought some Blueberry underwear in the mean time (it has an absorbent layer - he will still feel the wetness but I won't immediately have a puddle on the carpet).

Anyway - good luck! I have a feeling this is going to be a long process.

  • We are going to try in a couple of weeks. We are going on vacation, so I decided not to mess with it until after then. I don't know if she will take to it or not, but I'm not going to force it even if I really want to stop buying diapers :o)

  • Trying to but we haven't been gung ho about it. She goes on the potty at regular intervals at daycare and then at home we ask her every hour or so. We started a sticker chart. 5 stickers she gets a little treat (like 3 MandMs). When she gets the whole thing filled I have a little prize basket for her. So far we have made it to 8 stickers! Woo hoo!

We also got the pullups that have a cool sensation and she notices when she goes a little better with those. She usually tugs and then we wisk her away to the potty. She hasn't told us she needs to go yet. She will go in her room to poop and says "hay mama i'm pooping" so I think it's a matter of time hopefully when she tells us just a smidge earlier! We'll see. I'd like it to happen before summer break but I am not sure if that will happen.

  • We are potty training too.  We've been working on it since about April being very lax.  Asking him if he needs to go, making him sit on the potty every 2 hours whether he says he needs to or not.  They have him sit every 2 hours when they change him at daycare and he goes about 50% of the time.  The thing I have the most success with is leaving him with no pants/diapers on at home and letting him run around naked.  He seems to notice more that he is about to go and will ask for the potty.  The only problem is the warning has a 2 second lead time so you have to get him on really quickly.  Last night he went poop in the potty which was a big deal for us.  I think I'm going to hit it really hard this weekend while DH is at work (he doesn't like accidents and is content to just keep him in a regular diaper all the time to prevent them) and hopefully make some progress.

  • We are and have been.  We tried doing the 3 day thing, but every time we try, Will gets sick. But he's peed/pooped on the potty for over a year.  We've just been giving him time to learn the feeling of needing to go.  He can do it, but usually chooses not to.

You'll find us many mornings at home naked waist down.  He can get up on the potty all by himself.  He has issues just feeling the need, then recognizing that, then getting to the bathroom in time, or making time to get there.

We hate underwear.  They're too tight, and he can't get them down in time.  we have more accidents with underwear on, than if we just go commando.  [anyone know of some boxers?]

I don't have any tips.  Good luck.

  • We are. Ugh. Potty training twins is not the funnest thing I've ever done. They are pretty good about pooping on the potty but still have trouble recognizing the need to pee before it happens.

I'm definitely taking this slow. We tried the underwear only for a day or so but with two to run after and clean up accidents I decided to wait a while before we try it again. I'm hoping they will get a better grasp of when they need to pee soon because that seems to be the only hang up. They voluntarily sit on the potty but we are lucky if they actually pee in it before getting bored and moving on to the next activity. At least I'm changing poopy diapers less.

  • Reese had a huge set back when Grier was born, so we just kind of let it go.  About a month ago, her teacher at school started "potty training boot camp." Her goal is to have all of the 2 year olds potty trained by the end of the summer (class starts at 18 months).  All of the kids sit on the potty, regardless of age, though.

We knew that Reese could  go on the potty and knew when she went.  She would ask for her diaper to be changed, stinker! So, one day, her teacher just didn't give her a choice and put her in big girl undies.  She would go at school and after about a week, she started going at home, too.

She's still in diapers for naps and bedtime. We cloth diaper, so pull ups weren't an option.  I liked the cloth because she could feel when she was wet.

Pooping in the potty is still hit or miss.  She's actually been holding it and then will poop in her sleep, which has lead to some awesome rashes.  She's also managed to get constipated from holding it, but the pedi has assured me that its fairly normal with potty training.  We've upped the reward for pooping to two stickers instead of one.
