New Here...Quick question
Hi all,
I just moved back to the Boston area after living in Upstate NY for 4 years while my H was in school. We got married just over a month ago and I need to go about changing my name. What is the easiest social security office to get in and out of within easy distance of East Cambridge. Has anyone been to the one Downtown? I think I can walk there from my apt. Thanks all!

Re: New Here...Quick question
Congrats!
My colleague went to the Cambridge office, and she said it was pretty quick. I went to the Quincy Center one, and I was in and out of there in 10 minutes. Not that you want to trek out to Quincy, but I think the key is to go at an off-hour. Oh, just an FYI for the next steps - for my driver's license, I went to the downtown RMV, and I was out of there in under half an hour at lunch time.
This. Avoid the lunch "hour", i.e. ~11:30-1:30, and you should be fine.
Oh, and once you go to SS you can immediately go to the RMV. I had called the RMV back before I got married and the jack ass told me I need my new SSA card to change my license. Untrue. Of course my SSA card took super long (supposed to be like 2 weeks but mine took 5-6) and I called the RMV back after about a month and that person said I could go in.
Yes, I'm pretty sure it just has to match in the online system, which is right away.
You can check RMV wait times online. I found that very useful when I lived 5 minutes away from a branch.
I went on a week day, a Friday I think, in the middle of the month either mid-morning or mid-afternoon and there weren't many people.
The RMV had more but I had to go after work so that isn't surprising. Being able to check wait times online is really helpful though.
ETA: It wasn't a big hassle to change my name. The only two frustrating parts were the first RMV employee lying about needing the SSA card and when I faxed my marriage license to one of my student loan companies (Sallie Mae) they "didn't get it" so I had to call up the manager and get his direct fax to make sure it went through. The only other place you have to go to in person is the bank. Everyone else you can do online, by phone, and occasionally you need to fax your ML.
That's the O'Neill building. I work in the O'Neill Building and changed my name at that office in minutes. There is a line when they first open and at lunch time. If you visit at 10-10:30 ish, you could be done in a few minutes.
Take the orange or green line of the subway to North Station. The green line is running shuttles from Lechmere to North Station due to bridge repairs at Science Park.
