Tomatoes and Peppers fading while everything else looks great?

Ok here are some pics. Whats up with my tomato and pepper plants? I thought I might actually be over watering so I didn't have DH water them when I was just gone for 4 days but now I'm back and they look the same or worse. Ideas? The only thing I can think is that the soil might be too shallow where they are. Everything else is booming and looking wonderful.

Below: cherry tomato on right, pepper in front of it and to the left side.

Ugh - its hard to see in this picture. This plant has funky "legs" coming off of it towards the bottom - almost like pre-roots. Dunno if thats relevant or not but I figured I'd mention it. I did just recently put the cage around it so I am not sure if I might have disturbed it too much doing that?

Also, this was taken this morning so thats why the sun isn't on them yet.

TIA!

  • I don't really know what's wrong with your tomatoes, but I'd suggest you pick all the brown stems off.  This will help redirect the water to just the healthy parts of the plant (at least that's what I understand to be true).

I don't know if you'll find this helpful, but I'm in CT and I water every other day, depending on if it rains or not in between.

Re: "funky legs" I'm wondering if they weren't planted deep enough?

From what I can see the pepper plants look fine, just be patient.  Many years I don't see anything produce until later in the summer.

  • I'm confused.  what's the problem?  that they aren't growing fast?  i see you're in albany.  how hot has it been lately?  tomatoes & peppers really take off when it hot, hot, hot!  however, poor soil will also stunt growth.  a rule of thumb is to spend 90% of your $$ on soil & 10% on plants...soil's that important.

also, tomatoes, especially if overwatered, tend to start to sprout roots at the bottom of the stem.  they look like little nubs.  this is why you can plant the tomatoes deep (bury the stem) unlike other plants.

    does this make any sense?

did you see the pictures? As I said before, my tomato plants are dying.

  • yes, i see your pictures, but they are too far away to diagnose any issues.  i see small plants with mostly green leaves & a few yellow ones (and a few yellow leaves isn't unusual.)
