netflix changes

So I'm shocked no one has mentioned this yet.  As we got the email last night I was thinking what should we do...we stream some things, usually when we're bored as we dont have cable.  The DVDs are really what we want because that's where the new releases come in.  I was wondering if, with the price change, the streaming library will contain new releases or not.  If not I guess I'd drop streaming and stay with the DVD's, esp. since Amazon prime streams videos too...

If you have Netflix will you change your account?

We don't have cable and very rarely use the streaming feature, so we'll just drop streaming and actually save a few dollars a month. This really doesn't bother me at all.

We may go back to dvds only... It makes me so angry they are doing this..i kind of want to drop it all together and stick Rioredbox but dh wants to keep it... Are they planning on putting newer stuff on streaming?

We don't have cable and use the streaming all the time.  We're debating dropping the videos since we only ever watch 1 or 2 a month and Redbox would be cheaper but the selection at Redbox is limited....

I haven't checked it out yet, but I am also considering paying for Amazon Prime once my free mom subscription runs out (boo....) and utilize their streaming library.  DH likes all the History, Animal, National Geographic type shows and I am not sure how well they are represented there.

Yeah I thought about the Redbox thing too...I was going to call them and ask if they will be expanding their streaming line or not.  If they do, I'll consider streaming only.  If not, we'll probably just do the DVD's.  I definitely didn't have a visceral response to this.  It seems like many are really mad about it all.

Yeah, I honestly don't get the outrage but then again I am completely uninterested in streaming. My price is actually going down - there's nothing to complain about.

I'm annoyed, and I want to drop the streaming, but DH says he watches is a lot after he gets home from work. We go through phases on the DVDs, and we probably end up paying more overall then we would w/ Redbox, but I know we're paying for the convenience of having them delivered, and not having to worry about returning them on time, or late fees.

We have Tivo premiere, so we also have the option for Hulu, so I told him to look in to that and see if that is better. The thing I don't like about the Netflix streaming is that there's not a lot of new content. I didn't know that Amazon Prime had streaming; we'll probably look in to that, too.

I'm annoyed. I would switch to streaming-only if they improved their library, but their selection of streaming is VERY limited right now. I'm going to check out Amazon's options. If they have a decent catalog, I may just get streaming videos from them.

ETA: Nevermind, the free movies from amazon are even worse than the ones from Netflix. Blah.

What I thought was interesting was that when Netflix refers to their last change (where they added $2 or so to the prices) they talk like the base price was for streaming and the $2 was for DVDs.  It's funny b/c we considered it the other way around.  Netflix was leaning really heavily on the hope the near future would be all streaming.  They didn't realize so many people just want DVDs.  So they are now saying that $2 for DVDs isn't enough to charge (perhaps rightfully).  BUT, when so many people considered the streaming a nice (cheap) little add on, charging at least $8/mo for it is steep.  I think they had to do this, but there will be consequences for them.  They will lose quite a few subscribers, and many wil pick either/or, not both.

This. I think we're going to drop the streaming and check out other options.

I'm annoyed because I just started taking advantage of the streaming when we got a Blu-ray for Christmas.

This bugs me too!  I'm not "outraged" as some seem to be, but it is a poor business practice and it makes me question if I want to stick with the company.

I have been a faithful Netflix customer since 2004, so I don't really want to leave...Currently, my plan is 2 DVDs unlimited and unlimited streaming. Truth be told, DH and I watch maybe 2 DVD's a month. I'm thinking I'll nix the DVDs and do streaming only. There's always redbox 5 min away. DH wants to cancel it altogether.

We don't stream at all.  We only use the DVDs.  Our price is decreasing so it's a bonus for us!

I'm exactly the opposite of just about everyone. We use streaming constantly. I think the selections are pretty good for movies and excellent for tv shows. We watch so many tv shows using it, especially now in the summer when there is nothing "new" on. And we get access on one account to both our iPhones, the iPad and our two laptops. I watched stuff quite a bit on vacation in the airport on such on my phone and then on the iPad at my parents house (since my dad has a uncanny knack for watching the absolute stupidiest thing on tv). I even watch tv shows at the gym. Take the commercials out of an hour show(or 2 sitcoms without commercials) and it's about 40 minutes and perfect timing for a run or on the elliptical. I watch so much SVU and Arrested Development at the gym. It's fantastic. Actually a decent motivator for working out too. We've had our current DVD for probably 3 months sitting around. We really should send it back in. If we cut anything it will be DVDs for sure. If we don't cut them then we will make a concentrated effort to not let them sit for months on end.

I'm with PP... we use streaming constantly, and NEVER use the DVD's. I actually just switched my plan from the 1-a-month to streaming only, so I'm not bothered by their switch in pricing But DH and I are don't sweat it if we don't see movies as new releases... we're fine with waiting a few months until they are available on streaming (or on HBO) We love it, and just signed up for Hulu +, too. I honestly can't remember the last DVD we rented...

not sure if you guys know this but netflix is thinking of getting rid of their dvd mailings alltogether because it doesn't make them enough money.

i think their streaming content has sucked lately since they lost their starz contract too. we aer looking into other options
