Hubby and I we be married for 3yrs. next month, and this will be our first time hosting a dinner party. I already have 19 people sent r.s.v.p.'s to come to the dinner. I have been having nightmares that we were going to run out of food or that it would be extremely hard to cool down our house. We are catering mexican food for 25 people...we ordered 15 servings of fajita's that feeds 1 1/2 lb per person, and and 10 servings of enchiladas that feeds two per person...both comes with rice, beans, chips and salsa. I plan to order desert from a local bakery. I have also ordered a margarita machine and a table that seats 8. I plan to decorate the patio with tea lights and do table decorations and detail clean on friday, because the party is this saturday at 5pm. As you can see I'M NERVOUS...
For entertainment we plan to have playing cards and dominos. My BIL will bring his ipod for music. Do you guys have any other suggestions. Am I leaving anything out besides taking a deep breath???
Re: My very first dinner party..and boy am I NERVOUS!
sorry **We have been married for three years**
Oddball things I forget- since it's nighttime make sure the bathroom and light switch is easy to find. A nightlight or candle solves this. Also make sure you either check the tp regularly or put extra out.
Do you have more than an 8 top table? Will there be drinks besides the margaritas?
Something else- have a game plan for when people arrive. Designate your husband to greet guests and get them the first drink. If people haven't been to your home before tell them where things are.
19 people is quite a crowd for your first time!
You'll have plenty of food. I find people often eat less at parties than if they were just at home. They might pig out on something like chips & salsa, but that you probably have plenty of and it's cheap.
I wouldn't expect anyone to actually play cards or dominoes unless that's big in your circle. Don't force the games on people, just put them out where people can see them and spontaneously start if they're interested.
Number One Tip: be relaxed when you answer the door. Nothing says welcome like a hostess wigging out
Since everything's catered and you're decorating the day before, hopefully you won't have anything to do and will be bored waiting for the party to start.
You'll have beer and N/A options in addition to the margaritas?

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Yes!! This is super important.
I didn't for my first summer pary and I was all wigged from getting everything ready, so I was literally sweating as I answered the door, plus all the extra bodies, and with all the guests coming and going on a 90? day, it was hotter in the house anyways, so the house was uncomfortable until just about the end of the party.

wow, it sounds like it's going to be a mexican feast
i'd also make sure that there are other drinks besides the margheritas, especially water (in my experience, at summer dinner parties, water is one of the most important items), so maybe get some bottled water and cool it in your fridge.
good luck and have a lot of fun!

Sounds great! and since you are having all of the food catered, that's half the battle... now will will have time for focus on the smaller details, like extra drink options, seating, ice, decorations & TP.
I would try to have everything done at least 1 hour prior - that way you can go have a shower, relax & get dressed. When your guests arrive, you are refreshed and calm...that will put them at ease too and make for a great party.
Good luck & enjoy!
