Another food/travel post - road trip food

If you were going on a 5,000-mile road trip (hypothetically speaking), what food would you take along to try to prevent the problem of having to eat out for every lunch and dinner? And what snacks? You will have access to a cooler with dry ice.

We have some stuff already, but I am feeling uninspired.

  • Trying to think of the stuff we pack when for our annual drive to FL.

    Fruit

    Dried fruit.

    Crackers, peanutbutter.

beef jerky. (ick, but H loves it)

    odwalla bars.

    case of water.

    sandwiches.

    cheese sticks

    yogurt and granola.

I guess nothing real original, sorry.

  • Road food is a big challenge.  We have done nuts, no sugar added dried fruit (like Fruit Leather), Kashi bars and beef jerky as no fridge needed snacks.

Sandwiches--I love "salad" sandwiches on the road (brings back childhood memories of road trips to FL with my grandparents and picnics at parks along the way).  Pack chicken, tuna, or egg salad into containers and assemble when you're ready to eat.  You could do regular sandwiches, too, but the ingredients list gets more complicated (lettuce, tomato, condiments, meat, etc).

Cheese, crackers and salami or prosciutto--You probably wouldn't want to eat this while driving, but it transports well for a picnic.  Plus, different cheeses provide lots of options.

Pre-cut veggies and hummus could also work for a picnic.

Veggie chips are a little more inspired than regular potato chips or pretzels.

  • Great suggestions so far.  I would add popcorn and homemade trail mix.

I would primarily focus on some various sandwich ideas.  Have you seen JuliD's recipe for mock tuna salad?  That would travel well.  Also, my current obsession is a wrap with peanut butter, sliced banana, chopped dried figs, and a touch of honey.  Yummy, filling, and no refrigeration required!

  • Twizlers... Smile

For soem reason, I don't eat Twizlers any other time of year, other than road trips. It comes from my days with Volunteer GVSU and we would go places (or have meetings).   GRSP - did Volunteer GVSU have the same 'impac' on you?
