Question about Kindle/Nook apps on Phones

I am sorry if this is a dumb question but my husband and I were chatting about this and were not sure of the answer. When using the kindle or nook app on my droid phone, will it use the data plan the entire time I am reading or does it only use the data plan when it is syncing and loading up the book? Thanks in advance for the help! I tried googling but had no luck.

Re: Question about Kindle/Nook apps on Phones

  • I think it's using it the entire time. It seems to be on the phone I have a kindle app on.

  • Depends on the app, but usually, it will pre-load some of the book, and then load sections / chapters as needed. Books take very little bandwidth to download. A few megs for an entire book. It's not like a move or anything.

  • On my iPhone and iPad, it only uses data to download and sync. The whole book is downloaded at once, and I can turn off WiFi and data and still read the whole thing, no problem. If I want to sync to another device or to my desktop, I need to be connected (it usually syncs periodically as I'm reading and then on quit or completion), but it's not necessary.
  • the app on my android only requires data to download each individual book. I have over 70 books in my library on my nook account, and it only downloads the books you want at the time, not the entire library.

I just checked the kindle app and it syncs everything when you open the app and it can detect a connection.

Thanks for the info! I have been using both but it sounds like the nook app might be a better option until I actually get a nook e-reader.
