nook and iPhone?

My current 3g iPhone with ATT is broken and our contract is up next month.  Our plan is to switch to Verizon and I'm getting another iPhone.

I also want a Nook.  I got to play around with a friend's this weekend and I've been interested in getting one prior to that.  (it was the nook color - reader's tablet, also the one I desire)

The issue?  DH says to me today, "Why do you need a Nook?  An iPhone can do all of that."

How do I come back at that?  I mean, he's kind of right but still.  So, nesties, give me fuel to flame my argument!  I don't want to be left behind in the world of technology but DH is being too sensible haha.

Re: nook and iPhone?

  • Well, the Nook has a much bigger screen. There's no way I'd want to read on an iPhone on a regular basis. I have a Nook (the black & white one) and if I had and iPhone, I'd probably get the Nook app for it so I could read during stolen moments waiting for appointments and such, but I wouldn't want to read a whole book on it.

  • Agreed about reading on an iPhone.

Also, if you get the black and white nook, it has e-ink from adobe, so it is easier on your eyes than reading on a lcd screen.  You can also read it in the sun, at the pool, etc.

I have a nook and a Blackberry and an iPad, and when I read I read on my nook because I look at lcd screens all day and it makes my head hurt after spending all day on the computer.

  • Yes - I have tried reading books on my iPhone with the Kindle app but I didn't get very far because it was annoying as all get out....

  • Your husband's right in that the iPhone can do what the COLOR Nook does.  The Nook is just bigger.

BUT, the real key to the e-readers in my opinion is the eInk.  The fact that I can read an electronic device in the bright sun is amazing.  If the Nook you choose doesn't have that, to me it's not worth it.

I'm a fan of keeping my electronic devices fairly separate, so that flavors my opinion here.  I like my Nook to be just a reader.  It's like a book.  I wouldn't be devasted if my $120 Nook fell in the pool.  Other than swat a bug, there isn't much more you can with it besides reading.  Same with my music-- I have an iPod for just music, and no music on any other devices.  It think when we start consolidating too much, that's when the devices get slow and far too personally valuable and expensive.

This is a good point.  I think our thing is that we try to consolidate so we're not spending as much (or keeping up with as much).  I think my husband is secretly anti electronic devices - except the ones he wants :)

I also keep thinking about the sun/outdoors factor - the nook color I played with did ok in the sun but not like the e-ink (?) ones.  I'm going to have to keep researching what it is I want....the nook color was enticing for me since it's a tablet and can do so much more than what I thought.  It would be so nice, especially with a baby (convenience factor)...less is usually more for us right now!  :)

  • I also have a B&W Nook and love it. I have an iPad, too, and have downloaded the Nook app, but I really only read on the iPad occasionally. I don't like reading books on the color screen. The eink screen, however, feels real enough to me that I've found myself reaching to turn a page.

If I were you, I'd get the B&W Nook and an iPhone. With the Nook app, you can sync the two so you can pick up on roughly your last page from your Nook if you want to read a few pages on your iPhone. (I haven't found the syncing to be perfect, but it's usually close enough to let me find my page quickly.)

  • You can also put a nook app and a kindle app on your laptop to compare and see if there is one you like better...

I have a Nook Touch (the eInk one) and an iPhone.  I think they're a great combination, and I looooooooooooove my Nook.  Of course, I ALSO have a tablet, but I'm just a technophile.  Wink
