Yarn recs please

I have starting making an afghan and both my toddlers/little people love that I am doing it and like to hold it/say hyow much they love it, etc. I am thinking of stopping this project and making them each there own afghan.  I would like a yarn that has as much yardage per skein as possible but is still soft and comfy and of course washable.  They would be for LOs after all. :)  I have both a Michaels and JoAnns near me, also hobby lobby.  Does anyone have any suggestions for brands of yarn that would be appropriate?  I would like to have a few choices and take them to the store and let them pick the yarn/color themselves.  Unfortunately I am incredibly unknowledgable about brands and quality.  I was only hoping for a brand with high yardage because I hate weaving in ends.  Thanks so much for any advice you have!

  • BTW, if it makes any difference I will be crocheting these.

  • I think Caron Simply Soft will fit the bill. I know some people are anti-acrylic, but it's the most easily washable and is economical. CSS comes in a ton of different colors and is very soft to the touch. You can definitely get it at Joann and Michael's, not sure about Hobby Lobby.

For weaving in ends, one trick to make it easier is to hold the end of the old skein along the top edge of the work while you start working with the new skein and just hide it that way. This doesn't work as well with very open/loose patterns, but otherwise give it a try. Also, you might want to look up the Russian join on the KnittingHelp website. It makes for a very clean join so you never have to weave in ends at all. That and the felted join are my two new favorites but the latter only works with natural yarns.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I second the Caron Simply Soft. I've been knitting with it lately and I think it's the nicest feeling yarn I've used for a project so far, and you can get it at a variety of stores (Joann, Michaels, even Walmart if yours carries yarn) . Also, there's no dye lot so if you run out 90% of the way through, you don't have to worry about a new skein not matching.
  • I ditto Caron Simply Soft as well.  I've used it for a few afghans and it washes well (on delicate and hang dry).

  • Hobby Lobby's store brand feels really nice and is washable. The acrylic version is called "I Love This Yarn." They also have "I Love This Cotton" and other versions. It's not like when you can buy the skein that weighs a pound or anything, but the yardage should be decent.

  • For little ones I've crocheted lots using the Paton's yarn and/or the Loops and Threads(?) Michaels store brands.  They wash really well!
