Izaty's resort-Onamia

DH and I were invited to a wedding here.  I've never been to the resort, but the reviews of the hotel rooms on TripAdvisor don't seem that promising.  Has anyone stayed here before?  I know Grand Casino-Mille Lacs is also close, but their reviews are no better.  Anyone have any good experiences with either place?  I'd prefer not to drive 1.5 hrs home after the wedding. TIA
No Siggy

Re: Izaty's resort-Onamia

  • DH and I went there for their couples getaway package a few months ago. They didn't clean the room at all the whole time we were there or give us new towels. We justified this by the deal we were getting through the couples package the room ended up being about 30 bucks a night. The rooms are not fancy, but if you're just looking for somewhere to crash after the wedding it's clean and comfortable.

  • Izaty's has gone through some rough financial times in the past 10 years. My cabin is nearby and I was just at their marina a few weeks ago. The lodging all looked to be in decent condition but the main clubhouse is looking tired. The resort has been through new owners and bankruptcy and all sorts of drama, so I think that plays a role in not getting five-star service. It's a total shame.

Anyway - if you don't want to stay at Izaty's but want to crash nearby, there are other options within 10 minutes (honestly, the casino is out of the way - I've never timed it but it's around 20 minutes from Izaty's): The Northern Inn in Wahkon, McQuoid's in Isle, and the Budget Host north of Onamia are all close (Wahkon is the closest - 3 miles from Izaty's).

Keep in mind that the Mille Lacs area as a whole is fisherman focused and not luxe like some of the Brainerd Lakes resorts. But it still has it's charms - it's just that sometimes the charms are hidden behind a guy with a mullet.

If it were me, I'd stay at the Northern Inn. You can walk to Wahkon's ice cream shop, steakhouse, gift shops and two bars.
