Where to store onions/potatoes?

We keep our potatoes and onions in our basement, in a wicker basket, on top of an old TV we don't use. I'm thinking about getting a hanging basket to hang from the ceiling. Where do you store/keep your onions and potatoes?

Re: Where to store onions/potatoes?

  • I have a three tiered "pie plate" on my kitchen counter.  On the top tier is a plate full of onions and garlic.  Now, we go through them pretty fast, so it's just easier to store them here where they are handy.  (We also store our tomatoes and apples on the two tiers below.)

Potatoes don't move as quickly in our home.  I purchased a "potato sack" storage thingee to keep them in the dark (and from sprouting), and hang it on our wall-mounted pot rack by one of the hooks.

  • We don't typically have potatoes at our house.  Onions, though, we use about every other day.  So, we just throw them in one of our kitchen cabinets with food.  No special place!

  • In the pantry, where it's dry and dark.

  • I put them in the fridge.  I put onion in everything, so really the only time I have whole, uncut/peeled onions is if I just went to the grocery store.  I normally chop them up and put them in tupperware in the fridge. DH doesn't eat potatoes so if I buy a sack of them and put it they normally go bad before I can finish them.  Growing up we always kept them in the pantry, but we don't have one here.
