selling your crafts

Hi girls, I am looking for your thoughts, I recently got married and made my own aisle runner. which got most off my friends and friends of friends buying them from me. I also have been making blankets for family and friends for a while and someone told me that i should be selling them.

Do any of you girls sell your craft things? If you do sell, do you go to craft fairs or flea markets? Do you find you make much money from selling after paying for your supplies and stuff?

TIA!

  • We do craft fairs and our local farmer's market. I don't think we make much money (I don't keep track, I let my MIL with a master's degree do that lol) but we do it for fun. We are doing better than last year, so it just takes time.

  • Did you ever try ETSY.com

That is a great well known popular site for all things handmade.

I'd also try some local craft fairs, ebay, and cragislist.

Also weddingbee.com is a great site for that, just go to the site and look under classifieds

  • The key to making money is knowing how much it costs to make it. Example: If I make something that costs $1.25 to make, I know I need to charge more than $1.25 for it. And when determining prices, think "Would I pay this much for that?" etsy.com is a great place to start, though they do take a profit (I think it's 3.35%, which is good!), so account for that and shipping.

Etsy is really hard to break into. It takes a lot of hard work and you pretty much have to list something daily to have it be seen.

  • My mom makes wonderful soaps, lotions, bath salts etc.  She concentrates on one big show a year.  You don't want to hate making your version of "soap" because you "have to" do it.

Pricing she determines by calculating the cost of all her supplies and time.  You have to make the call on what you want to get paid for your time and if people will be willing to pay that price.

Example.  I quilt and cross stich which takes wads of time.  I don't think people would pay for the materials and time charge (even at only $5 an hour) that it would price out at, so I don't sell.
