Thursday Randoms

Our car was part of a recall and we got a letter weeks ago about getting it repaired. It just dawned on me that TH hasn't done anything about it yet, so I emailed him so I can get the website address and look up authorized places to take it to.

I swear if it wasn't for me, car stuff would never get done. I handle all car repair and oil changes. Smile

Re: Thursday Randoms

  • Wow Gvsu, I'm impressed.

Is it just me or does it seem that Thursday came really fast? I mean I'm glad and all that the weekend is almost here but it just doesn't seem like it should be Thursday.

I made chicken and chorizo skewers last night. They turned out AWESOME!

  • Michigan Awesome is on Groupon today.  pay $15 for $30 worth of awesome

  • I've currently been contemplating the Michigan Aweseme coupon.  It's popped up a few times but I haven't bit yet.

I biked to work today and didn't die, so I was pretty happy about that.  I'm nervous for the ride home a bit more, because it will be busier.  *fingers crossed*  I can't do worse than Andy, who ran into a stop sign biking to work the other day.  Unfortunately, nobody was around to capture this on camera, and, fortunately, he just had a little scrape on his shoulder and wasn't seriously injured.

OMgosh.  Hehe.  I want to ask how that happens, but I'm not going to because Karma will for sure let me know how on my next bike ride...and I don't want to know that badly.  Smile

And go you!  Yay for making the trek to work on bike.  That is awesome!  I would for sure die on my way there, or it would take me 8 hours, or both.

  • My job is starting to get on my nerves.  Huh?  The only cure right now would be a huge raise + 6 weeks of back pay on my check tomorrow.

For some reason, I don't think that will be the case.  Stick out tongue

It's not that far for me, thankfully. :-)  I still couldn't understand from his description how he managed it, he was on the bike path, crossing the street, and the stop sign was in the path or something along those lines.  Or so he says.

I will give a shoutout for helmets though - he was going slow, but his head (well, helmet) conked the ground and it could have been bad news had he been riding without it.

  • Speaking of biking, there are some first class idiots in my 'hood who like to bike around.  Great, but they really need to be wearing helmets.  I could forgive the lack of helmets if they would simply obey the rules of the road and ride in the appropriate direction!  A bike is a vehicle people, it moves with traffic!  Yesterday evening I was making a right turn on red and almost took out a biker in the wrong lane.
  • I'm looking for writers for my Eat Local, West Michigan blog (plug: if you're interested please fill out this form: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dGctU05TT0o3aTkxRTNhQjdZbV9MQ0E6MQ#gid=0

I've had a couple of local organizations contact me this week wanting to collaborate on campaigns so I'm pretty excited.

  • Every year we go to a 4th of July parade and every year I get so mad that kids are not wearing helments on bikes. My thought is that it should be a rule, if you are in the parade you wear protective gear for bikes and roller bladers.
  • I wonder if Mira is having a baby...*

  • Great job, Juli!  I know that's not just a couple of blocks.  Well done, and I hope your ride home is safe and easy.

  • I agree on the helmet deal with parades.

I hope Mira is not relaxing with a good book right now.

So, for a week now, I've had a dull pain where I think my left ovary is.  I finally called the doc and have an appointment for tomorrow.  I hate when I'm feeling off, and can't draw the line between it'll go away and I should probably see someone about this.  Does anyone else have a problem with this?  Or is it just me reacting against my upbringing and my mom calling the doctor at every cough?

First - I hope all checks out okay.

Second - Yeah, there's always a difficulty in deciding what's worthy of a doctor's visit.  If it's not an obvious emergency, I usually wait about a week to see if it goes away, then go.  If it's a sporadic pain/issue, I just bring it up at my yearly visit.

I have this problem as well.  Last winter I had a cold that was sticking.  I didn't know whether it was bronchitis or just a cold and wanted to get in to see a dr.  I ran into issues with not having a current pcp, but ended up having my dad call in a script for antibiotics.  Turns out it was just a cold.  Oops.  But I always feel "better safe than sorry."

:::raises hand:::  That is something I will always struggle with.

When I had really bad stomach pains back in May, H asked me after the first really bad episode to call my doctor.  I knew he would nag me, so I told him I would fully knowing I wasn't going to.  Then he asked me if I did, and I told him yes just so he would drop it.  Obviously I eventually came clean.  And after I ended up in the ER, I did call my doctor.

But I didn't want to call over 1 bad stomach ache.  I figured it would go away.

It's hard to know when/when not to call.

So I just found out from H that there will be baby related games at our baby shower on Saturday Hmm I was told by the main hostess that she wasn't planning on doing baby games, just putting out some yard games for people to play.  We wanted to keep things pretty casual.  H talked to the hostess (my aunt) and she said she wasn't in charge of the games, and she wouldn't tell him who is (probably one of my other aunts or cousins). Um....most of the guests we invited are childless and in their mid to late 20's, most aren't even married.  I guarantee baby games will NOT go over well with our group.  I'm a little annoyed because when asked what type of shower I wanted I said casual, back yard BBQ with NO games knowing it would make the guests uncomfortable.  *sigh*

This is what happen with my friends shower. I suggested a casual brunch so people could get it done and over with and not have to take out the middle of the day in the summer. No games. I got games.

I also hinted that I would love strawberry shortcake for dessert. I'm not a cake person, esp grocery story bakery cake. I got cakes at all of my showers.

At least that was better than my "luncheon celebration" with my family for Amelia. My mom and I got there last. All my sisters and cousins were on one end of the table and their kids were at the other end. They didn't save me a seat at their end. I sat at my own shower with the kids (and luckily my mom). Nobody even bothered to come down to talk to me.   Yeah...my family sucks!  It was the most awkward thing ever. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I was so made I wasted $40 on gas money to travel there. That was when gas was like $4.25 a gallon.

Oh geez.  It gets better.  I just found out the hostess fridge went out.

  • We're celebrating my dad's and grandpa's birthday tonight.  My grandpa will be 91 on the 31st!

I offered to make my grandma's Texas sheet cake, and my mom took me up on it!  Mom isn't big on accepting offers of help.  Anyhow, I pulled the cake out of the oven and realized I made it in the pan that was just a little bit bigger the last time.  The cake rose right to the top of the pan.  You have to frost it while the cake it hot.  So, I pulled the cake out, set it atop the stove, and started to carefully pour the warm frosting over it.  And then I found out which way our oven leans, slightly.  What a mess!  Sad and laughing over the lost frosting as I cleaned the stovetop off today.

  • Yikes to all the shower dramas.

Wop - Could you call your Aunt and give a polite reminder that you don't think games are a good idea for the group you invited?  Otherwise, hopefully the games will go better than you think.  It can be a good icebreaker for people who are don't know each other and even though they can be corny, it'll probably be a smidge fun for particpants.

  • LOL, I'm still here.  I am feeling pretty sh!tty today though.  That has to be a good sign right?  RIGHT?  That plus the full moon tonight (well actually tomorrow AM) must mean something.  Wink

Wop, Sorry about the shower drama.   I had games at all my showers, even though the hostesses knew how I felt about them.  One shower they even started the games off with "We know S hates this but. . ."

GRSP, Happy bday to your Grandpa.  That cake, while messy, sounds very yummy!

  • My 12 second whine:

Jim's back is out, and has been for a few days.  He hasn't been able to do much around the house (including prepping for a showing) or with the kids, and I am worn out.

You don't even have to respond to that.  Feels good just to get it out.

Here's a related note, that might make you giggle:

Andy threw out his back at basketball last Tuesday.  He emailed his boss Wednesday morning and expained he was going to be out sick because of the back issue.  His boss replied back that he should have said he was calling in "old" for the day.

  • Thanks for the laugh!  That is funny.  We've been making old man jokes all week.

  • GRSP, I'll add a husband-related whine if it makes you feel better.

Mine has been a bit of a curmudgeon lately.  I know he's stressed about my new endeavor (all aspects, I think--losing my salary, the distance, my job prospects after) and doesn't always take it out in a reasonable way.  At times he'll make snide comments about my character flaws and how I'll need to overcome them to succeed, at other times he gets really tight with the purse strings over things that don't make much sense.

While I love that he's supporting me in this (read: allowing me to do it) and has been really helpful in terms of composing a workable budget, sometimes it's a lot to take.  I am really hoping that once things get rolling, he'll stop giving me "helpful advice" about all things law school.

  • DP, sorry he's doing that.  All of the preperation anxiety has got to be stressful for you both.  Did he go to law school, or does he just think he's being "helpful"?

Side note, I love the word "curmudgeon."

Related note, I hope that things get better.  When ever you add stress to a relationship things may crack a bit at first until you figure out how to make the new situation better.  You'll figure it out.
