Resume question

A post on MM got me thinking.

I worked for 2 different companies that were bought out during my time there. I currently list them as Company B (formerly Company A).

But in thinking about it, the first company I worked for was bought out in 2001, and the second was bought out in 2005. Do you think I still need to say (formerly Company A) if it's been that long since they had a new name?

Re: Resume question

  • I think listing only the current name would be fine. If that's what they'll find if they were to Google them, etc. and that's where all of the HR records are kept, then I'd just list one to avoid any confusion.

  • I would just list the current since the dates are old. The only reason I would keep the old company is if it was a very well known company in the city. But since it was bought out they can't contact any from there or get any records.
  • My opinion is to mention their previous name especially if their former name was better known it's good to have it on your resume. By "better known" I mean more widely known.  If the previous company name has a better reputation, even better to have it on your resume!

I just interviewed for a position a month or so ago and when people asked me, I'd say X company and they'd have confused looks, but when I said "they used to be Y" everyone would immediately knew which company I was talking about. Biotech/pharmm companies are constantly buying each other so I think name changes are more common in this field.

  • I would actually leave it as is.  If they do a background check that includes employment history, it'd be best not to have any questions lingering.

However, I'm sure they'd just ask you about it if they were worried.

  • Leave it the way you have it. You technically had different employers along the way, and the way you state it reflects that.

Also, since you're relocating, unless the companies you worked for were all marquis companies, you can't necessarily assume people will know that company B used to be company A when you're in your new location.

I see it a lot (still) up here in Massachusetts with people who were hired by Gillette before they were taken over by P&G.  People want to (and should) mark the point in time in that company's history in which they were there.
