total garden newb here, need advice

i live in CA where it hardly ever rains and it super hot and dry. we just moved into our house and before this, we've never had a yard to maintain. i really want to plant some flowers along the side walk. we also have two big wooden planters i think they're called. right now they have old, dry soil and dead plants in them. should i totally empty them out and put new soil and start fresh? basically i want to know what kinds of things i can plant that can stand to be out in the very hot, dry weather. any advice help, TIA!

  • The best way to find things that grow well in your climate is to use native plants--you can Google it.  I imagine that a lot of succulents will pop up.

You could also try some other fairly drought tolerant plants like yarrow, zinnias, marigolds, and pentas, but these will have to be watered every day while the succulents will not.

What to do with the soil is going to depend on the type of plant you put there.  Some native plants do better in poor soil--like my coneflowers, while the other plants I mentioned will do better in a more nutrient rich soil.  You would probably just need to add a bunch of compost as opposed to all new soil.
