I feel terrible

My brother just had his gallbladder out, and I am not visiting him.  I don't want to go to the hospital because I am pregnant. I am afraid of MRSA, and other mysterious infections.  I feel particularly bad because my parents are out of town on vacation so they are not there visiting him.  I just called to check on him, and asked where his girlfriend is.  He said she wasn't coming until tomorrow.  So now I feel really awful.

You can get MRSA in a lot of places now... I would most likely test positive as a hospital employee.

Get out!  I just read this horrible article about a woman who got MRSA in the hospital while giving birth.  She gave it to her son through breastfeeding.  They ended up in treatment for over a year.  It was in SELF....let me see if I can find a link.

  • OMG those SELF magazine articles are SO over the top. Every time I read one I laugh hysterically while reading it outloud to DH, who then spends a good 3 days making fun of SELF for publishing such hysteria. LOL.

My friend got MSRA. She thinks she got it from work (she was in engineering). I would go visit him.

  • Haha, okay!

Really, one month SELF wrote this insane article about our water. And how not to flush tampons because then it gets into our water system and we drink menstrual blood!

It was so over the top.

  • I'm sure your brother understands you not wanting to take the risk.  Don't be too hard on yourself.

Glad he got through the surgery OK.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

OMG really?  Ha ha ha.  I have never heard of that before.

I am not sure if I am overly paranoid about hospitals.  I was paranoid before I read that article.  Until Mesa pointed it out I didn't even think about women who actually work in hospitals who are exposed all the time.

Yeah, there are horror stories about MRSA but I'm so used to it! It's kind of nice though, with these hospital acquired infections, we use them as a "threat" to get patients to not stay too long.

I'm with Rock. I'm sure he understands!

Some people have MRSA on their skin already. It won't get in unless it comes in contact with an open wound. I completely understand not wanting to run the risk especially since it is not just MRSA you have to worry about, but other infections as well. But chances are you will be fine. Patients are the more susceptible ones since they have tubes and needles, etc stuck into them all the time at the hopital leaving nice spots for bacteria and viruses to get in.

My grandfather was in various hospitals and rehab facilities for a year and we went to visit him all the time and never contracted anything. If you go just don't touch much of anything, wash your hands often, and use the hand sanitizer that is usually in every room.
