Sept 10th party...summer or fall menu?
I am soo over certain summertime foods and I wonder if lots of other people are or will be by the time of our party. With that in mind, would you do summer type foods or jump into fall?
What are your favorite fall foods that would work at a buffet?
Re: Sept 10th party...summer or fall menu?
It could go either way, but I think a lot of it tends to depend on where you live and the weather. September is the start of football, maybe not this year, and it's usually getting chilly.
I really like to do soups and sandwiches. One that I'm loving right now is a 13 bean sausage chowder. Soup always tastes better the next day so it's better to make ahead. You can make sandwiches much more fancy then the deli tray too.
And because everyone says it- lasagna or baked ziti.
Taco bars, potato bars, salad bar are also fun. It just depends on the event.
Go with the weather. It'll be "summer" here til mid-October, so if you're serving butternut squash soup right after Labor Day, people will look at you funny. If you live in one of those cold states where it snows right after Labor Day, go for fall.
Which summer foods are you over? For me, summer cooking is about fresh farmer's market meals and there's no real way to get tired of what's local, natural and wholesome. (See my menu post down the page for what I'm doing this weekend.)
I did a huge fall dinner party for 60 people a couple years ago and served brown sugar-bourbon ham, beef tenderloin with mustard and herbs, loaded mashed potatoes, green beans with toasted hazelnut-lemon butter, buttered corn, pear-walnut-blue cheese salad, a fruit crisp (apple?) and a gingerbread cake.

It's summer where I am til October, so I would stick with a BBQ (brats, dogs, hamburgers) I tried these new cheeseburgers last night, I bought Hidden Valley Ranch Packet, put it in the hamburger and mixed shredded cheese. they were so good!
Also, watermelon, salad bar, corn on the cob, pasta salads. Depending on where you are, you could do fall food if your party is at the end of september and it starts getting chilly. Fall foods: chili, goulash, veggie soup, breads, casseroles.
Thanks
Lemme know if you want me to link to any of the recipes.
