How are your gardens doing? Plus harvesting question

Ours has gotten huge.  I think we are going to be having tomatoes coming out of our ears.  But DH is on board to help can so we are going to jar up some homemade spaghetti sauce, homemade salsa and then can the rest of the tomatoes.  We have snap peas and bush beans galore (and my picky lab who likes very little has apparently decided she LOVES snap peas and tries to steal them out of the garden...such a brat!).  Our onions are doing great, have already picked some.  We have broccoli that is doing great, surprised it actually produced the veggie!  Anybody know when to tell if its ready to pick?  Same with summer squash?  We picked one thinking that it was done but I don't think it was, it was VERY hard.

Oh and the most surprising and exciting product was our apple tree that was given to us in memory of James last year actually has an apple!!!  We were told that they don't produce fruit for the first 3-4 years so that was a HUGE commotion at our house when we saw it :D

  • Aww that's pretty neat about the tree.  :)

    I don't know anything about the broccoli. Ours grew tall but never got flowers on it.

    My iceburg lettuce is bushy but no heads yet. still.

    broccoli is tall but no flowers.

    Cauliflower never made it from seed.

    green onions are small but still going strong

    We pulled and ate a few white and purple carrots the other day. The orange ones are still growing yet.

    Strawberries = nill

    We got 2 apples that the birds got to first. No pears or cherries. 2 whole blueberries.  :)

    Pumpkins and musk mellon are going nuts!! We have lots of flowers, so hopefully that means lots of fruit.

    Corn got laid down with the storm but most of it is back up and taller than Katen. No corn yet but we're hopeful.

    Zero beans from two plantings. The seeds must have been completely bunk.

    Roma and cherry tomatoes are going nuts. Regular tomatoes are right behind them.

    Purple and white bell peppers are coming along. We have some yellow and green ones that we've harvested already. They were really good!

    Overall, not a great year for harvest but I'm still happy because we've learned a lot of things, so next year should be better.
