I have big bushes in my front bed. They got all huge and leggy late spring with flowers and now the flowers are gone and I have this funny thing occurring. The leggy parts are still there and look fine, but now the plant is growing a second batch of leaves in the middle. Its a pretty sizeable ball of nice new leaves. I just am not sure if I am supposed to trim off the leggy stems that have bloomed? I wish I had a pic - will take tonight if it helps. I haven't found anything on google yet. Oh, they are the purple flowered variety that look more like a bush.
Re: Geranium trimming?
I agree with PP.
I've never heard anyone describe geraniums as "big bushes" before. How big are they? I saw this post yesterday but I was waiting for the pic to be posted.
Oh, that's a perennial. I was thinking the annual.
You can always deadhead it. I'm not sure if it will get a second bloom on the new growth or not.
Cranesbill? Big bushes? If you say so.
not mine, obv., but yes, its possible.
I have a funny geranium story. I have two pots with geraniums on my front porch and they have been doing extremely well all summer with great blooms. I kept noticing dead flower stalks on the ground next to my porch and wondered how they were getting there, since I didn't think they would just fall off in that spot so far from the edge. I asked my DH about it one night and he said it wasn't him, so I was really confused.
About a week later, DH was walking our dog on a Saturday and noticed our mail woman walk up to our porch, deliver our mail, and snap off a few flower stalks that were fading from the pots.
Mystery solved - our mail carrier gardens for us!
So I guess deadheading them is a good thing because our plants look awesome with no extra care from me except the occasional watering.
