Re: What are your thoughts on this article?
I find this whole thing to be ridiculous.
Yes, childhood obesity is nothing to play around with, but I strongly doubt foster care is the answer for 90% of the obese children in this country.
How about the fact that low income families are more likely to become obese due to the higher cost of fresh produce and whole grains? Not to mention minimally processed foods and those with less sugar and preservatives.
How about the fact that low income families in this country have little, if any, access to adequate heathcare in order to guide them to losing weight in healthy and sustainable ways?
How about the fact that American society as a whole doesn't place value on the benefits of exercising and portion control? Nevermind availability of safe public areas in which a person could exercise (excluding affluent suburbian areas).
The problem of childhood obesity is actually a symptom of a MUCH larger public health and culture problem in our country. Taking "fat" kids away from their parents won't do anything except flood our already overwhelmed social services system with children who have no business being in foster care.
How about we take some of our tax dollars and invest in public education about healthy habits... especially low income urban neighborhoods and rural areas. How about we work on this healthcare clusterfuck so that all Americans can see a reputable doctor and receive correct, helpful guidance in living healthier lives?
ETA: I am also bothered by this proposed law because it implies that the parents are purposely putting their child at risk by making them obese. They aren't force feeding them while they're strapped to a potty chair for goodness sake, they're doing the best they can with the resources and knowledge they have.
To imply otherwise because you don't want to face what is really going on is disgusting.

This article pisses me off. The foster care system is already overloaded with not enough homes for the children that are out there. Then throw in the fact that children who ARE being physically abused aren't removed from the home, yet you want to remove children who are unhealthy doesn't make any sense to me.
I can see monitoring a family and offering services to a family who has an obese child, maybe even make it mandatory...but removing from the home doesn't work.
