Mixers and Elixers at HMNS

Has anyone ever been?  If so, what is the crowd like?  I'm just wondering what to expect (and trying to decide if I actually want to go).

Re: Mixers and Elixers at HMNS

  • rrr became a member when he first moved here, so we went as one of our first dates. If the music is something you'll like then it's ok. It's like any other place to hear music and buy beer and wine.  But DO NOT go there expecting to eat anything. People sit like vultures outside the catering curtain to pounce on the cheez-its, chip crumbs and costco tortilla pinwheels as they're put on the table.

It's definitely a lot of groups of singles, but there are couples. We wandered around the main exhibit hall while were there because I hadn't been in a while. I can't say it's the best thing ever, but like everything it's as fun as you  make it!

EDIT: Oh, and I totally forgot, we saw the IMAX film while we were there, so there's that.

  • Ok, thanks.  What is the age demographic?  Are drinks expensive?

A group of us are going to see the Led Zeppelin laser show tonight, and some of them want to check out Mixers and Eiixers since admission is only $5 this week.  I'm feeling very "meh" about it, and would prefer to just catch the show at the planetarium.

melrrr pretty much nailed it! I don't have much to add. We had fun because we met some friends up there, chatted with them, and saw the IMAX. It wasn't the best thing ever, but it was a nice change of pace.

I'ts pretty wide. I don't know how old you are, but I'm sure there will be plenty older and younger. It's a Beatles cover band too, so that could raise the age range.  We were there 6 years ago, so there's no telling what drink prices are like, but it's just cheap domestics and cheap wine, so not an arm and a leg. I'm so food-centric, i'd probably let my stomach play a part of the decision. I wouldn't want to get there early for the bands, eat a few cheese cubes and then be starving by the time the laser show is over!

  • I haven't been this year but sharing some comments from a friend on his thoughts about going this week since there is a discount:

Loved Mixers and Elixers last year and the year before, but last week was horrible. I spent 15 dollars to get in and left after about 20 minutes. Only 3 bars and so many people. Shortest line for a drink was about 45 minutes. If you just want to go chill, look at the museum, and enjoy the band then it's gonna be a good time. You never know though maybe they will fix all the mistakes they made last week.

  • Thanks for the info.  It looks like they now have various food trucks coming each week, so that is a game-changer for me!

ETA: according to their FB, they have "more than doubled the number of bars".  Can I get an "Amen!".

  • We went last weekend and it was packed. We heard the guys at the bar saying that it has never been that full for the first weekend before--something to do with them not doing it next year??

It would have been really fun, but was just so crowded. The lines for the bar were ridiculous, the upstairs inside bar was located at the top of the stairs just outside the gem exhibit and when we left at 8:30 the line was all the way back to the African stuffed animal exhibit.

    Its was LOUD--which I expected.

They were supposed to have food trucks outside--but they had problems with getting the power for the trucks to run so that kinda flopped.

Tenth Anniversary 10000 Comments Combo Breaker

i've gone several times the past few years, and have always enjoyed myself.  i went with some dance friends though, and we went upstairs to dance.  WAY less crowded, and there is at least one bar upstairs, and it never had a long line.

my SIL had commented it was a meat market when she went, but i'm apparently scary and unapproachable, (and i went with DH), so that was never an issue for me.
