Help! Tell me what this is?! *fungi?*

Re: Help! Tell me what this is?! *fungi?*

  • I watered yesterday and this was NOT there.

This morning I went out and saw that this vine is completely wilted and  upon further inspection found this.

I have the book what's wrong with my plant but I can't find anything like it.  I'm guessing it's mildew of some kind.  But it's puffy and not powdery.

I have this in a box with another cantaloupe vine and two other plants (it became my catch all leftover box.   No treatments/fertilizers just water.  I typically water every other day but it's been very hot here they past few days so I watered yesterday AM.

It has not spread to the fruit yet but it is on the plant that holds the fruit.  Also has not spread to the other plants yet.  But even so are those safe?

  • I found something like this around the base of one of my tomato plants about a month ago. I removed it and put it in the trash and it hasn't come back. It came off really easily and the plant is ok now.
I twitter randomly about gardening, sustainable living, local restaurants, cooking and more. Follow me on Twitter at Sarah_STL
  • boo, I ended up taking the whole plant, vine and all and dumping it into the trash.  Sad face now for my lone cantaloupe.  It was probably two or three weeks away from harvest.
  • totally a shot in the dark but I wonder if its eggs of an insect or frog of some sort?

  • Hard to tell but it kinda looks like dog vomit slime mold.

  • Christy-

You could be on to something!  I emailed pics to the ag extension in my area.  This AM I went out and it's on the other vine but this vine looked healthy (the other was kinda dead looking and already started to go brown)

And the puffy is now bright yellow.  When I did a search that's what came up was this dog vomit slime.  So I'm gonna wait to hear back from ag extension before pulling it.  If it's dog vomit I think it will just go away on it's own once the moisture goes away.  no water for that box haha

  • I hate that stuff.  I've had it before, a lot last summer.  It's harmless but so gross looking.  We scoop it up and throw it away.  I think if it is disturbed too much, black puffs of spores come out, which helps it spread.  Hopefully it goes away soon!  I think I remember reading you can lysol it, but def. don't do that if it's in your veggie garden.
