RIP Borders

They announced yesterday they'll be closing their remaining 400 stores; thus resulting in the loss of 11,000 jobs.

SAD! Sad

Re: RIP Borders

  • that sucks :(  I hope the people that are laid off are able to find something else quickly. apparently our economy is still not fully restored.
  • Definitely; Borders has always been my go-to book store!  One of the few that was left open near me after the first round of closings is by the train on the way home from work.  They have great service and online book requests for a book to be held for pickup.  I just did it last week :O(
  • I am so sad! Do you know if they will stay open online? DH has a Kobo that he bought last year and I am hoping he can still get the ebooks

I don't know, but I wondered about that too!

I found this article. It appears Kobo itself has been transitioning users to their online book store so it should have little to no impact on Kobo users.

  • We have a HUGE Borders in our mall, I can't even imagine what is going to go into that space.  It is awful that so many people are losing jobs and that a BOOK store is closing.

  • Our Borders all closed a few months ago.  The weird thing is that our Borders was 2 blocks from the B&N and while Borders was always empty, B&N is ALWAYS packed!  To me, B&N is so much more expensive.  Ah well.
  • It stinks for all those people losing their jobs but I have always had far better experiences at BN for service and selection.  The Borders near my house closed recently.  There is still a huge one in a very busy shopping center and if it closes, it is going to hurt that plaza.

  • Christen- ditto! I've always preferred Borders; although I get their coupon emails so maybe there's why.

Chelley- I'm curious how it will affect plaza's also! Several Border's I have visited are in large shopping areas.

Sigh...I have some great memories at Borders; lol.  The one on Michigan Ave here (although it closed at the beginning of the year) when I was littled and we'd come to Chicago my dad always made us go there since it was so big.  One in the burbs where we met my college room-mate for my sister to try on her prom dress she lent sister.  Another burbs store where my dad and I got reading material before a trip to Guatemala.

My hometown store where it used to be cool to hang out in their coffee shop.

    Geesh, I'm nostolgic

  • I definitely loved Borders for the coupons.  I like B&N because I think the stores are pretty and I like to get my coffee and browse, but holy heck they are full price!!  Anytime I'm in there I want to scream-- "Don't you people realize you can get the shiz on Amazon for half the price!!!  SHEEP!  You are all sheep!"

    ::steps off soapbox::

  • I used to buy almost all my books at Borders; the B&N in our area were not as nicely run (or as large) as the Borders, and I disliked that you had to purchase B&N's frequent buyer card (offends my moral sensibilities).

After I got my Kindle I buy almost everything from Amazon - very, very few books are bought in hard copies anymore.

Exactly this. I have a sad obsession with Amazon. But I will say that I still shopped at borders since they always had cute little things in there. Oh and Seattle's Best Coffee. I'll miss that too :(
