Moms - help with naps

Zoe hasn't been much of a napper in the last month and a half or so. She would sleep for about 30 mins every 2 hours or so, and was content and happy so I was ok with it. She goes to bed around 11,  waking up around 8-9 to eat, then falls asleep again (after about 30-40 mins of being awake in her crib) till 10-12.

In the past week she has been falling asleep around midnight and then continues about the same morning schedule. She takes maybe 2 or 3 20-30 minute naps and has been extremely cranky in the afternoon/evening. I've tried putting her down for naps in her crib, lamb chair, pack n play. Nothing works. So, my questions are:

How do you get your child to take longer naps?

How can I get her to fall  asleep? I've tried singing, music, her little musical seahourse that we play at bedtime, walking away, pacifier, rocking her

How long is too long to leave her by herself to fall asleep? I want to try putting her down if I think she seems sleepy, but I don't want to just leave her forever, even if she's not crying.

In the past week and a half the only thing that has changed that I can think of is that she learned how to roll over.

Please help! :)

Re: Moms - help with naps

  • I wish I had some advice but I am in the same boat as you!! Cat naps every two hours or so. I wish we could be on a two-nap schedule :( I am sure it is possible but you would probably have to keep her awake during her crankiness and fight the nap until a little later.

Good luck, I hope you can figure something out! Sorry I couldn't help but just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one :)

  • I don't know how you do it with 2! Do they even sleep at the same time? Before it sucked getting anything done because I knew I only had 30 mins, but at least she was happy. Now she becomes a bear that refuses to sleep, even though she is rubbing her eyes, stroking the back of her head, scratching on whatever surface she is on...all her sleepy cues! She just won't sleep.

  • You need to start keeping her up, or doing more physical activities with her.  I know she's not moving around much, but do you have a pool?  Or play in the sprinkler outside?  Even letting her finger paint with pudding expends quite a bit of energy.

  • I have been pretty fortunate with Kennedy.  She usually takes a morning nap for an hour, and then sleeps for 1.5-2 hrs in the afternoon (usually 1-3pm),  She goes to bed between 9-11pm and gets up between 6-8am.

I agree with Nicole - I have to keep her really busy, or else it's a disaster.  Being outside really tires her out.  Now that we can't swim, do tummy time, spend a lot of time outside, etc. it's harder to get her to nap.  I usually just put her in her swing though.  She falls asleep pretty easily that way.  If the swing doesn't work, I lay down with her in bed.

  • I have been going through the same thing. While we were in Virginia this past week, Lila was a perfect little angel! She only fussed maybe once or twice the whole week. In fact, MH's family asked if she ever cried. We were driving around a lot and when we did, she slept. She also had TONS of attention and lots of people playing with her so when it was time for a nap or bed, she was exhausted. Yesterday, she went back to her cranky nap times and was up every hr or 2 last night. Today I am going to figure out some activities to do with her because I can't go through another night like that! :) Activities are definitely key to a happy baby!

  • Even letting her play with a small ball can be tiring - they try to mouth it, roll on it, push it around, etc.  It's amazing how quickly they wear out when you have something cool/new to play with.

  • Thanks for all the advice, everyone! We have a pool so I think I will start taking her in it more frequently. She has finally started enjoying tummy time since she got her harness off and has learned to roll over. She loves playing on her activity mat and on the blanket I put down for her with her toys. I think it's time for some changes to our routine. Thanks guys! If you have any more suggestions, keep 'em coming!

  • We just went for a swim for about 30 mins and then Zoe was done. :) She actually smiled this time! It's not too hot out so I think we are going to go for a walk in a bit  too. Woo hoo!

  • I don't know if you are not for "scheduling" but it worked for all three of my kids.  I used "Healthly Sleep Habits, Happy Child".  I didn't start with P until he was about 8 months and I was at my wits end with waking up and short naps.  I started from Day ONE with the twins.  They were on a three nap schedule until about 6 months, then we moved to a two nap schedule, and I am sure over the next month or two we will move to one nap.

I know a lot of Moms aren't really for following a schedule, but all three of my kids are very different and following semi-strict schedule has been key.
