Flower Bed in full sun-advice?

Hi everyone!

I haven't posted on this board before, we are just starting to do a little work on our landscaping. I know nothing about gardening/landscaping but am excited to get started!  We are tearing out a bunch of dead shrubs in our large backyard flower bed, and are putting in new paver stones. Basically will have a blank slate to work with, but limited budget. I am hoping to put in a weeping cherry tree, and some plants/flowers that will come back every year. I noticed a lot of plants are on clearance now, but wondered if it's a bad time to plant? Also the flower bed is in full sun all day-any recommendations as to what to plant that will come back every year? I live in Michigan-not sure what zone that is!  Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Flower Bed in full sun-advice?

  • I'd check to see what's on clearance. Some of them may be annuals, so you'd have to replant in the spring anyway. It's not an ideal time to plant, but some people have had success if they keep on top of the watering.

I would google "full sun plants", or browse gardening catalogs for good full-sun stuff.

I'd also google USDA growing zones and plug in your ZIP code.

You may also want to visit a local nursery (not a big box store, a real nursery) and ask someone there. They can give you tips on things that work in your area, and even native plants, and can help you get started.

    GL and have fun!

  • Lillies, blackeyed susans, coneflowers, daisies, all come back each year and they also multiply.  I also have a big purple butterfly bush in full sun.

Lots of bulbs will be out in the fall for planting if you like tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, alium, crocus.  Our first year in our house we planted about 300 bulbs in the fall for spring blooms

  • I'm in Michigan too.  If you know any gardeners, let them know you're starting a flower bed, and let them know if they're going to be dividing any plants, you'd be happy to make a home for them.  You're not in Grand Rapids, are you?  Because I need to give away some blackeyed susans.

We live in zone 5, and in my full sun, I have coneflower, blackeyed susan, tickseed, lavender, creeping phlox, peony,  and some lillies.

  • Oops, about timing.  Wait until the heat wave is over.  Clearance plants aren't going to be pretty this year, but should come back pretty nice next year.

  • We moved into our house last summer and pulled out a bunch of overgrown bushes on three sides of the house and had to start new with plantings.

We got all of our bushes on clearance in fall last year and they all came back in spring and are beautiful now.  I got hydrangeas, dogwood, azaleas, boxwood, etc.  They looked pathetic when we bought them but got them for an excellent price with a 1 year guarantee.  I also got some rosebushes for a great price from a high end nursery.

I got decent sized hydrangeas for about $8 ea and they are so gorgeous right now!  They were basically twigs with a couple of leaves when I planted them in the fall. It was fun to see what they looked like after planting just twigs.

I did one side of the house in crocus, daffodil and tulip bulbs. I got 50 bulbs for about $7 last fall and planted them just before we got our first frost (I'm in Wisconsin).  They all came up!  In spring we transplanted some daylilies inbetween the bulbs so after the bulbs were done blooming we had lilies (which are in full bloom right now).

  • Thanks so much for the great advice! This is just what I was hoping for-I want to try to plant some clearance things now(definitely after this crazy heat wave), and do a bunch of planting in the fall as well. Just wanted to make sure this idea would work. I don't mind if it doesn't look as good this season, as long as it comes back next year. Thanks for all of the good suggestions-I saw a great deal on black-eyed susans, daisies, and hydrangeas yesterday. I definitely want to look for the purple butterfly bush! Even googling pulled up a lot of great info-and I will do that for the zone as well. Oh and I am in the Detroit suburbs, not close to Grand Rapids, but thanks!!
