Breast Reduction people...
how did you begin? primary care then referral? i'm not sure how to go about this whole thing where the insurance is concerned.
was yours covered?
we are on an open network, don't need referrals, but it's tricky because a lot of these plastic surgery places will straight up not work with insurance, which i understand, they totally don't have to.
i'm just wondering what your experience has been. i don't want to get hopes up about having this done, only to find out it won't be covered... because i can't afford to pay out of pocket for it right now.
any help would be greatly appreciated : )
Re: Breast Reduction people...
I talked to my OB about it first. I printed a list of plastic surgeons out from my insurance web site and had him look through it. He circled 2 that he knew personally and thought would do a good job. I went to one of them and HATED him. However, he did do all the work to get it covered by my insurance. I interviewed 6 surgeons total and one really stood out (and she doesn't take insurance).
I got an "conditional approval" from my insurance. However, there were a lot of things about having it done through insuarnce I wasn't comfortable with (hospital not surgery center = greater risk of infection, if the weight removed was a certain % less than estimated, the claim could be denied, less experienced surgeons on their list)...
I did a TON of research. In the end I decided that I would rather pay out of pocket than take the risk of using a surgeon I wasn't comfortable with. It's not something that can be easily fixed if it's done wrong. I've had serveral friends go the insurance route and are happy, but there experience was much different than mine. I had 8 stitches, not a spec of bruising (except the IV), and almost no pain. I also get life time follow up and my surgeon is actually going to fix the tiny piece of scaring I'm not 100% happy with as part of my package. My insurance did cover the mammogram, pathology, medications, bloodwork, and a lot of other costs. I only paid for the surgeon and surgery center.
Let me know if you want to talk. I put a lot of time and research into my decision.
thanks! i would love to chat. i'll email you.
