Twitter

Can please explain to me the use of the "#" and no spaces in between words when someone posts their tweet?

Re: Twitter

  • It's called a hashtag and it makes it easier for others to search/find tweets about a certain topic or trend.

It's also the "cool" way to add meta information to your Tweet.  What you're doing, a general comment, etc. #incaseyoureintothat

On the more practical side, you can tag it with relevant information, and if you click on one, you'll see other Tweets that include the same tag.  For example, if you click on #sdcc, you'll see everyone's Tweets about San Diego ComiCon.  You can use this to follow whatever special interests you have, regardless of who's tweeting them.

Sometimes people make up a catchphrase as a hashtag that catches on, and people just run with it, so for a day (or more) there will be an endless stream of people tweeting about that, and it shows up in the top trends.  It's kind of like a siggy challenge or the games that show up on the Nest forums once in a while where everyone's supposed to post something on a topic.  At the moment, gobs of people are tweeting #everybodyhasthat1follower to share their pet peeves or comments about certain types of Twitter followers.

Yeah, I know too much about how this all works.  (I recently dated a Twitter micro-celebrity, and learned more than I needed.)

  • (my husband is in the family business at his fathers car dealership)...So if I wanted to tweet and tell people about their specials or the feature car I could tweet "Come check out the new Dodge Challenger at #hubbysdealershipname and that would be appropriate?

Yep. That'd work. You might also try to find articles or release info about the cars he carries and link to them, interesting tidbits about the staff who work there, or special financing offers, events at the dealership (free food? a celebrity visit?) and that kind of thing. Give people a reason to want to follow your dealership, and tweet at least a few times a week.
