Speaking of vinegar....

Like I mentioned on Michaela's post, I'm obsessed with cleaning with it! Does anyone else use vinegar for non-cooking purposes, and if so, how do you use it? I'm curious to hear. It is seriously amazing how many things you can use it for.

I have an old spray bottle that I filled with half vinegar half water, and I use that for cleaning our kitchen counters, floor, stovetop etc. If you let it sit for awhile, it really helps to lift off stuff that is caked off. I also use it for window cleaning. And sometimes, if our kitchen sink drain starts to smell funny, I pour a bunch down and it gets rid of the smell. I also use a vin/water mix to clean out the coffee maker by letting it run through the empty maker. It's amazing and so much cheaper than cleaning products!

Re: Speaking of vinegar....

  • Prior to today I have never heard of using it to clean but you have def found a lot of uses for it! Our windows desperately need to be cleaned maybe I will try it. I am a huge fan of Mrs. Meyer's cleaning products (for more than just the obvious reasons, haha) because there aren't harsh chemicals but vinegar and water sound even better!

  • We use it to clean our popcorn machine at work.  Half and half mixture just like you.  I didn't really think about using it everywhere at home though.  I keep a bottle of lemon juice to squirt down my drains when they smell, real lemons work better to put down the disposal and turn it on.  I used to do that before I showed my house for rent. The vinegar on the floor is probably way better for animals as well.  Swifter wet jet has some chemicals in there that if you don't wash it down right, your animals can die from.  And well, DH's dog loves to lick the floor like it's candy for no reason.
  • Hmm you guys just totally opened up my eyes to some new things. Pretty excited to try this out when I clean today :0)
  • You can spray vinegar on vines and poison ivy and it'll kill it without all the harsh chemicals :)
  • My pups eat their food in the kitchen and like to take the food off the plate, lay it on the floor, and then eat it lol so I hate to clean floors with anything chemically. I always do a good dry sweep and then mop with a vinegar and water mix.

I also add a little vinegar and sugar to flowers. When I pick flowers from my garden, I don't have those nifty little packets of food so it works well.

I also clean my washing machine with it. Every couple months, I'll run an empty wash with a couple cups of vinegar added in.

That is awesome! We happen to have a bunch of overgrown vines and brush along our driveway (landlord never cleans it!) so I am going to attack them with my spray bottle and see what happens. Thanks!

  • Wow all of those uses sound awesome! I really suck at cleaning. When we get the house I will need all of your expertise. I don't think we'll still be able to afford a cleaning service!

It's pathetic but I just don't have the deep cleaning gene. I keep up with little stuff like floors and countertops. But how to REALLY clean the shower? Got me!
