Strange & Random Poll
Say you're driving down the road and you see a thin female standing in parking lot of a restaurant. Clearly she is either going to lunch or coming from.
You don't know her, but she is laughing so you notice her...then you notice that she is skinny. Tall and skinny, but not gaunt. Pretty, probably 30's, dressed well.
What is your reaction? Mean, what would roll through your head, thinking about all of the details above?
~~~~~~
I'm curious if I'm just strange (I know I am, but hear me out) or if my initial thought is a result of my body size/type and body image.
Re: Strange & Random Poll
My thought would be if her cute outfit would look good on me or not....lol. And that I need to start dressing better.
And your aren't strange. I think about things like that all the time.
lol - that exactly. Or something like: Cute dress. Wonder where she got it. I wonder how long it would take me and Google to find it online. It probably wouldn't look as good on me. I really need to lose 30 lbs. I'm going to run when I get home and not eat carbs for a month. OOoh, an ice cream place!
It was Yia Yia Mary's if it matters.
My thought process: I wonder if she had a salad. I wonder if she only eats salads...man, it must suck to never eat good food. Maybe she is naturally thin and can still eat good food. I hate people like that. Maybe I should start eating more salads...
I would probably try to size her up against me. (I do this all the time - "is that what I look like to other people, or do I look larger/smaller") Sometimes I ask DH, and he just avoids the question b/c he knows it will be bad either way.
Then I assume that she must work out if she is thin. (Which is a weird assumption, since I am thin to normal sized and don't typically work out). Then I start wondering what her body really looks like under those clothes (clothes can hide a LOT!)
Yes, I am an overanalyzer!
A good friend is naturally thin and eats lots of yummy foods. She does also stay thinner because of incredible portion control. I used to think she ate like a bird. But now that I know more about portion control I see she just ate what we are SUPPOSED to eat, no more, no less.
This, I'm most likely noticing her outfit, haircut, accessories, shoes, nails, general put-togetherness because that's where I struggle. But like Dana#s if something in particular stood out to me I'd be comparing it to myself "I wish my hair would do that" or "I wish my arms were really toned like that" or whatever. It wouldn't occur to me to wonder about what she eats, unless she's actually eating when I see her.
I would end up comparing myself and feeling bad.
Something I have come to observe after years of working out/ running a ton, is that I really don't see a lot of super thin people that are health/fitness nuts. All the really skinnies I know (aside from eating disorder skeletor types) are just naturally thin. You don't see a lot of them at races and such. That just surprised me.
In answer to the OP, I'd probably wonder about about her work-out routine.
I don't run anymore because of my back injury, but even when I would run very long distancesI didn't race. I'm just not competitive, even against myself. Running for me was about relaxing & escaping from all my "to-do's", so I never wanted to race & try to set new Personal Records. (I did start training for a half before I hurt my back, but that was only because DH wanted me to train with him.) But I think most people would still consider me a "health/fitness nut". Health & fitness involves so much more than racing or even just running.
And you know me, so you know at least one "skinny" who isn't just naturally thin. I eat right & work out to stay this thin. But don't expect to see me at a race.
True. I definitely wasn't making a 100% generalization. It has just been my observation often that the majority of people I know who are that stickly skinny are just like that naturally.
Depending on how much she was laughing, I would assume she had wine for lunch and no food. I'm 5'9" and was a stick until I was about 12. I was "athletic" in highschool and college. Now at 36 I struggle with my weight a lot and I know that comes out when I compare myself to others.
I know 2 people who are very thin and say that "eating just isn't their thing" but that they are naturally thin. I have to bite my tongue around them.
