Paint question...

DH and I are having a heck of a time with the ceiling in the kitchen.  First of all, there was a seam that we could not get right.  He kept having to mud, sand, primer, paint....after about 3 times and a new kind of tape, he got it.  But now the paint keeps cracking in that section -- and that one section only.  It goes on fine, but it starts cracking as soon as it dries.  I think it's because of the weather -- even though we are running the air in the house, it's humid, especially higher up towards the ceiling.

I don't really know what else to do, besides wait and paint when it's not so dang hot.  Does anyone have any insight?

Re: Paint question...

  • Did your DH give everything ample time to dry between coats -- including the mud, primer, and paint?  If the paint is cracking, then it seems like the ceiling joint itself is probably cracking too...?  He may not be putting enough mud on.  I had that problem when we started the very first renovations on our house (I wasn't good at mudding yet, and didn't put enough on, and pretty much as soon as we started painting it cracked).  Maybe you can run a dehumidifier to help with the humidity?  Although the humidity shouldn't make the paint crack....it will take longer to dry, but shouldn't crack it.  I'm thinking that the real issue is the patchwork underneath, which is causing the paint on top to dry at different intervals, thus cracking it.

ETA: If you haven't already, I would also post this over on the D&R board.
