Random:  I want to rush out a cold beer to the runners that are running by my house today (In 100 degree heat...Katers, can you explain why?).  But in these parts I may get the side eye for having beer in the house.

Is it really that bad there?  I've always wondered if the rumors about that area were overblown.

Not as bad as it used to be, but there are still a lot of VERY conservative people here.  I think, like alot of things, it is more of an old school thing and the younger crowd is lightening things up.

Haha.  People in your neighborhood would think we were heathens.  It's not uncommon for us (just H now) to walk over to the neighbors with drink in hand to visit (neighbors probably have drinks too) or sit on the front porch and sip beer/wine/martini while talking about the day/week.

That is crazy to me.  Anyone know if it's true that mowing your lawn on Sunday is still illegal in Jenison?

Yes, I guess drinking WHILE running would equal puking.  EEW.

Some people can do it, so it's a nice thought.  Juli has mentioned that Andy has consumed beer mid-run on several occasions (including a marathon, I think).

Not during a marathon (although it was offered to him by some random drinking Irishmen during his first) but during a 5K and a 10K.  The Schmohz 5K we run every year hands out beer at every lap (3).  He tried drinking it one year and said it was awful.

However, at the 10K in New Orleans, some drag queens on a firetruck offered beer so he took some.  Since he was running slower (not killing it like in a 5k) he said the beer was actually refreshing.

Amachuta, you can turn your sprinkler on to the sidewalk to aid the runners - I LOVE running through sprinklers when it's hot out on my runs.

Oh yeah, good call on the sprinklers!  They are the best!

  • Wow, that's interesting about Zeeland/Holland.

We lived in Holland about 11 years ago (crazy how time flies!), and I think Holland was pretty much that bad.  We lived in an apartment complex, so no issues with our neighbors, but there are definitely areas that are very conservative.  It is my understanding that Zeeland is even more so.

L works in Zeeland now and always says he will never again live in Holland or Zeeland.  I think our inter-racial marriage is also a factor in his feelings.

Amachuta (or any other Zeelanders or Hollanders out there)--no disrespect is intended.

None taken!!  It is crazy how some people are...thankfully, we are NOT like that!

  • Hudsonville is still a dry town (as in, you can't buy alcohol of any kind on any day), right?  And recently (like within the last five years), didn't Zeeland just repeal their no alcohol laws?

I know that within the last five years, Ottawa Co. repealed the Sunday liquor prohibition.  I remember all of the "Say Yes to Sunday" signs in Grand Haven and was so happy it passed.  It was something I couldn't vote on (we live in the southwest corner of Muskegon Co.), but affected me since we party in Grand Haven.

  • I so wanna take a nap!

Ha, there's a fair amount of Berner owners in West Michigan - but we do like to take him out when the weather is cooler so you may see us one day!  Toby has been w/o walks during this heat wave.  Even G starts panting after 5 minutes.

Yeah, I have seen a few Berners around.  They are easy to spot!  Since the art fair was going on, I thought such an event might have drawn you to the lakeshore.  We aren't often out and about in the G-Rap.

Your willingness to offer beer to runners passing by definitely made me think you are not the traditional Zeelander.  Wink

I remember when the Zeeland and Ottawa County laws changed.  The Zeeland one only passed by a slim margin, didn't it?  I didn't realize that Hudsonville is still dry though.

And I have also heard that it's frowned upon to cut your grass on Sundays in some of those towns.

    LOVE!!

I am a huge fan of doggles.  I am CRAZY bored right now and anxious to get the H out of here.  And, FYI, when nerds get bored they google image search for funny pictures of dogs.

  • I am also crazy bored, but suppose that I could spend some time cleaning up this desk.  I could also spend some time to wrap up one of my projects.  I just know that the amount of work I have to do is much less than the time left in which to do it, so I'm not highly motivated.  Plus, my boss is out of office right now, so that does little to increase my motivation level.

I'm leaving this office probably around 3 to go to the other office closer to home to order my fans.

Okay, off to do something productive...

  • Oh, and Juli, I used to visit icanhascheezburger whenever my job made me want to cry, which last year was way too often.

  • I am always happy to see dog pictures of any kind.

And on a related note, I get to see my nephew-dog this weekend!  I'm always happy to see him.  I can get my "dog fix" from spending a little time with him.

Okay, off to do something productive...

I've been working on cleaning my desk and email inbox today too.  I could tackle another big project, but I decided to put it off until I got the aforementioned (ha!) desk and inbox organized, and until I complete some other miscellaneous little tasks that have been hanging over my head.  I'm feeling better about my workload today now that I'm more organized and have some of those little things done.

Is your last day tomorrow or next week?

I can't imagine how low motivation would go after putting in your 2 weeks.

I actually don't suffer from lack of motivation at my job, I suffer from lack of work.

  • Kasa, I agree that a clean desk is so helpful in increasing productivity.  It's weird to be cleaning out permanently.  Lots of things get to go in the trash.  I'm only keeping things that might be of use to an unknown successor.

Juli, I suffer more from a lack of work than motivation, too.  But lack of work seriously impacts lack of motivation.  I'm highly motivated when my to-do list is long.

My last day is next Friday.

  • My morning flew bye, and my afternoon is dragging.  That doesn't seem fair.

If any part of the day must drag, I prefer it to be the morning.  I'm finding the same thing to be true today.

I got invited to a weekend bachelorette party/celebration at a cabin in August.  I'm glad I got an invite, but sad I can't (shouldn't) go.  I'll be 37 wks pg, and it's 2 1/2 hours away.

  • Afternoons are always worse than mornings for me.

    Especially Thursday (my Friday) afternoons.

Especially Thursday (my Friday) afternoons when I'm leaving for somewhere fun after work.

Especially Thursday (my Friday) afternoons when I'm leaving for somewhere fun after work and I didn't get enough sleep last night because I stayed up to late visiting with an old friend in town.

  • Guess what!  Remember the Supreme Court ruling that I mentioned yesterday that would make my (work) life more difficult?  Well, they just rescinded that order!  They've now opened it up for a "comment period" on the language which runs until November 1, and then they'll re-evaluate at that point.  Woot woot!

(I know this doesn't effect anyone here but me, but I'm pretty happy about it.)

  • Juli, have fun in AA.  Our friends decided to skip the Ypsi beer fest because they have a lot of house/yard work to do.

They also had a blast yesterday wandering around art fair and grabbing some noms.

    Yay!

If I remember correctly, the last election results made me greatly dislike the composition of this court.

The ruling made me think of those full page spreads in magazines that sometimes look like articles but have "advertisement" printed at the top of the page.

Our Supreme Court is ridiculously disfunctional and completely a political machine.  I'm pretty bitter about it, actually.  The results of the last election were upsetting to me.
