Phones

What is your phone situation at home?  Do you just have cell phones or do you have a landline?  We are contemplating going back in time and getting a landline.  I don't know my exact reason, but I feel like we should have one before we have kids.  Our cable company offers phone service and I am hoping with one of their packages it won't end up costing too much more per month.

We mainly use our cell phones. But because Comcast is a$$  backwards, it was cheaper for us to get the triple play package (so internet, tv and phone) than to just get tv and internet.

I don't use the home phone very often, but it has come in handy a couple of times.

  • We just have our cellphones and are happy with that. If ever we do decide we need a home phone, we just plan on getting a prepaid cellphone (often those only deduct minutes when you place a call, not when you receive a call) and keeping it in our house.

  • We have a land line, but that's only because we live in a gated apartment complex and visitors have to be able to call in from the gate.  There's a code they could punch in if we gave it to them, but I wouldn't want to be giving that out to everyone anyway.  I actually never answer the land line unless I can tell it's someone calling from the gate because everyone I know who wants to talk to me calls me on my cell phone.  Most people don't even have our land line number, so most calls we receive on it are stupid sales calls.

If we lived in a house, we probably wouldn't bother with the land line.  However, I would probably consider it if I had children just to be on the safe side.

    "You're the L and the V, I'm the O and the E...Am I speaking clearly?"
  • We have a landline, but only for the alarm system really.  We keep 2 phones plugged into it - one down by the alarm keypad and one in the upstairs spare bedroom - but only the upstairs one has the ringer on.  We both use our cell phones to make calls, even from home.

We have a landline because I don't like cell phones (I don't own one!) and because I use a lot of long distance as my family lives all over the country.

I do have a blackberry for work that I do use as a cell phone if I really need to make a call, but that's rare.

  • DH has a "dumb" cell phone, I have a smart phone. I doesn't like being connected though so he's contemplating downgrading to a track phone.

FWIW, I had a landline for the first year that I was living by myself after college. I only got calls from my grandma and telemarketers on it so I ended up canceling it.

We're contemplating doing this as our old Comcast promotion just ran out, I think it may be cheaper.

Otherwise we just have cell phones and for those we're currently still on our parents plans Big Smile

  • We just have 2 iphones.  My sister decided to get rid of her landline to save money and the company told her that as long as she had it plugged in, she could still dial 911, so that eased her mind about not having a land line with kids.
  • We just have cell phones. We have been thinking about getting a land line but decided it was a waste of money since we are only using cell phones.

  • No landline for our personal use, and I cancelled my home-office landline for work about 18 months ago. Don't miss it at all...

DH is not a phone guy, so he wouldn't pick it up if it rang anyway. We did a workaround for our security system so if it needs to alert the monitoring company it does it by wireless as well.

Yeah, for ours there is some kind of remote device that we can get, that will be buried in the backyard, that will be in place of a landline, but we just haven't bothered doing that yet.

We each have a cell phone and really don't see a point of getting a landline.  If we had a big house or kids, I might consider getting one for safety reasons just because cell phones aren't always 100% reliable, but for now we're content with just our cell phones.

  • I decided today that we are definitely getting a landline before we have kids.  I was babysitting my 4 month old nephew and left my cell phone at home and my sister doesn't have a landline.  If there was an emergency I would have had to find a neighbor who was home to use a phone.

  • We each have cell phones, and we also have a land line. Really, it's for my home office since I work from home, but I use it for personal reasons occasionally, like to call my parents at their house, or when my cell phone battery is running low.

I used to think it would be a great idea to have a land line for emergencies like natural disasters, but it didn't come through.  During/after Hurricane Ike, all cell phones were down, so I thought I'd call my family to let them know we were safe, but our land line wasn't working either.  So much for that!

I am supposed to be getting a work cell phone when I go back.  They don't pay for my home phone, which is fine, but we'll probably still keep it because like Diane said, it's cheaper that way with Comcast.

  • At the moment we only have cell phones. It'll probably stay that way, is my guess. we'll see what the future holds.
