Help - we want to move to SC!

Hi all!

My fiance and I are both elementary school teachers in Howard County, MD.  I am going into my fifth year and he is entering his second year in teaching.  We are very active in our schools and would come highly recommended!  My fiance is certified in grades 1-5, as well as middle school math and science.  I am certified in grades 1-8.  We both already have our Master's degrees in elementary ed from Johns Hopkins.  We are getting married next summer on July 14, 2012.  We have been saving like crazy to pay for parts of our wedding and also to be able to purchase a house within the next two years.  Most of our family plans to relocate to South Carolina, and we definitely want to jump on board.  As teachers, we want to get settled into an area where we plan to stay for a long time.  Ideally, we would like to purchase a house and move to South Carolina about a year from now, but fear moving without the prospect of a job.  Does anyone have suggestions for ways to get our names into the local school systems, other than just submitting a resume online?  Ideally we would be looking at Horry and Georgetown counties.  We would be happy to travel down a few times over the next year to visit schools and meet with principals if that's an option.  Any advice or knowledge you have about the school districts down there would be GREATLY appreciated!

Look forward to getting responses!

Katie

  • Are you set on Horry or Georgetown county? I know that Charleston county is going through a hiring spree in the education dept.
  • I used to know the superintendent of Horry County schools, but she has retired... Sorry I can't help!

I would think if you're willing to come down though, I would try to arrange an informative interview with principals or board members in those counties.  Just tell them you are considering moving to the area and you'd like to meet them for lunch to discuss their district.  It'll get your foot in the door and give them a face with your name when they receive your formal application.

  • Thanks so much for the ideas!  I love the idea of asking to meet for an informal lunch/interview.  We aren't necessarily set on those two counties and would consider moving farther south if that's where the job opportunities are.  My fiance is going to get some experience teaching at a community college in Maryland to open up more opportunities for himself to potentially apply for positions at Coastal Carolina.  I'll be sure to keep you up to date as we make some trips down and get more information.  Thanks!
