Question: How to imply a "no smoking rule" in the house?

Hi ladies!

I'm a regular over on D&R but figured this was a better place to ask :)

I'm having my housewarming party on Saturday and my aunt and grandma both smoke....bleh.  We were new construction and have new EVERYTHING and the thought of the cigarette smell being in the house sends me into a panic.  At other family parties, they just smoke freely in the house, so I'm afraid they'd think the same for mine. I feel bad saying "please don't smoke in here" so I was thinking maybe if one of them asks for an ashtray just say it is outside on the patio table?  We only have a balcony so it isn't a huge space, but I think I'd be understanding if I was the smoker.

I just don't want to step on any toes-even though they are my family!

WDYT?

Re: Question: How to imply a "no smoking rule" in the house?

  • IMO, I think its perfectly fine to just tell them politely up front that if they need to smoke to keep it outside and you have the ashtrays out there for them. There is nothing rude about that...your house, your rules! You don't have to be a biotch about it like "If you plan on sucking on a cancer stick, do it outside" lol.

  • I think you should just stick to your plan of telling them that the ashtray is outside. They shouldn't be offended. I think it is offensive that they think it's ok to just smoke in anyone elses house. I used to smoke and I would never have even asked to smoke in someone's house. That is just gross and rude.

  • EW!  I know so many smokers and none would EVER light up in someone else's house.  I don't even know any smokers who still smoke in their OWN houses.

I think you just be upfront about it. "Grandma, I love you but you simply can't smoke in here.  I did set up an ashtray, chair and umbrella for you out on the deck.  Do you want a drink?  Here, I'll bring one out for you."  If she is mean to you or gets insulted after that, that's all on her.

  • If we have a known smoker come over to our place, we tell them that it's OK to smoke on the patio, ect.. They never take offense and telling them that there's an ashtray or having REALLY comfy chairs out there helps a ton.

  • on the tour of the house that ends in the backyard at the picnic table say - and we have this great yard for grilling, entertaining, and relaxing - feel free to smoke out here as well!

  • You're the best, ladies!

I don't feel as bad knowing that others wouldn't be happy with smoking in the house either.  Your suggestions are perfect!

    Thanks again!

  • Stated simply - no smoking in the house. Here's an ashtray and here's where you can smoke.
  • I'd be sure to place your "smoking spot" somewhere where the smoke won't blow back into the house, otherwise, all your thought will go to waste, and the house will be stinky anyways.
