The best fabric for this?

So I just started sewing (yay!) and want to make a couple (bunches) elastic-waist skirts. I'm getting fabric this weekend, and am wondering what the best kind to get is? Any advice?

If your new to sewing, I would stick with a light weight cotton. Stay away from anything that streches or is sheer. Get the feel for sewing first.
