XP...I want to learn to sew

My mom bought me a sewing machine for Christmas because I had told her that I wanted to learn to sew.  Well obviously, I was a little busy around that time and just haven't had a chance to look into anything.  Does anyone know or have recommendations for classes or places to go?  I think I need some hands on practice...I have absolutely no experience!

Re: XP...I want to learn to sew

  • Try a local crafts shop or quilt shop. They generally have some basic sewing classes. I have taken 2 ( I was still in HS) and it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. In my case it was a "camp" for a week and the first year we learned tote bags, pillow cases and scrunchies and the second year quilts. It helped me to learn the basic principles of sewing and how to work my machine. GL!

  • I think JoAnn's has classes too. Usually you have to bring your sewing machine though. Is it portable enough?
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

Yeah it's fairly small...a very basic machine.  I'll have to check out JoAnns!

  • I know it. Little far for you but in old town fair oaks there is a place called Craftology and they offer classes and I am pretty sure they have all the equipment there or you can bring your own

  • I've been planning to learn, too!  In my area, the local community college and K-12 adult school have sewing classes.
  • Ive been thinking the same thing!! Especially since custom baby bedding is expensive!!!

  • Check out the Crafts board.  At the top of the board is a link to an FAQ (compiled by yours truly) that answers this exact question and has a ton of learning-to-sew resources.

I've been meaning to learn for over two years and even got a machine for my birthday.  It's mostly been sitting in the closet all that time because I've been learning knitting first Embarrassed

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • If someone wants to organize sewing lessons, I'd be down to join in!  It'd be just the motivation I'd need to actually do it (are we in the same part of the Bay Area?  I'm in the East Bay, by Berkeley)
