...does our AC quit working. FML. It's blowing out cool air rather than COLD air. It's currently 82* in our house. Our thermostat is set at 75*. Now I have to pay a $100 fee for them to come check it out. And they probably won't be able to fix it tonight. Our insurance check would be great right about now for the new unit they're giving us.

Re: Only in 98* weather...
Dude, this happened to us about a month ago. We needed more coolant or whatever in it. That is what landlords are good for!
It sounds crazy that it's so cool by you. Right now, it feels like 102 here.
Kari, I hope they work that out for you quickly!

I know exactly how you feel! It was 88 in the house yesterday and up to 93 today! I'm more worried about my bunnies (who aren't supposed to be in that kind of heat) than me. The AC repair guy came out today and it turns out the freon was really low which caused some valve to freeze up. It's supposed to be getting fixed bright and early tomorrow morning. Good thing Marcelo is paying this bill! Hope yours is something easy to fix!
Homeowner question: Are you supposed to have freon added every so often? The house is 5 years old.
Generally, you should have the AC serviced once a year and this is something routine they'll do.
Depending on the state laws, you may not be able to buy freon yourself - in NJ you need a special permit.

So far it's going ok. Our compressor (I think he said?) went out. Easy fix. Cheap fix. The biggest fee is the $100 for him to come out. We have cold air coming out of the vent now-whereas before we had cool air, at best. Not even cool air. Like when you turn your car on after it's sat for awhile and your air is just starting to work cool air.
The insurance is paying for us to get a new unit, but Jon and I are paying more to get an upgrade. The insurance will only pay for us to get a shotty version of what we already have...which they don't even sell the freon it takes to keep this beast running after December of this year.
Fingers crossed this works!
Thanks! Guess this is good to know - could explain why that part broke. I don't think there's every been any freon added and I'm not sure if you can buy it yourself here.
