I tried making some tonight and it didn't go well!! I used this tutorial which seemed very simple, but I had some trouble.
For anyone who has made this or something similar-- Do you get the soap just hot enough to melt, then let it cool a bit before your pour it? The soap was so hot when it came out of the microwave that it almost melted the plastic bags when I poured it in. Also, when I tried to submerge the bag in the ice bath, the outside of the soap hardened quickly and the inside where the fish was floating around was still VERY hot-- when I took it out and let go of the fish (I was holding it in place with chopsticks) it floated to the bottom because it was still completely liquid in the center.
I also found it hard to control the bag while pouring the soap, but I think that may be b/c the bags are too tall-- I used 4" x 2" x 9 1/2" treat bags. Perhaps trimming them down a few inches would make it easier to handle?
Any tips would be appreciated-- Thanks!
Re: Has anyone made Fish in a Bag soap?
I've never done fish in a bag before, but I've done a lot of melt and pour soaps. I normally microwave in 15-30 second increments depending on the batch size, stirring in between each time you heat, sort of like melting chocolate.
I noticed that they didn't really say that in the instructions in the blog - that might help melt it more evenly and let the heat distribute so it cools down more evenly when it hits the ice bath?
