XP-car??

So we are in the market for a new car.  We have a 2007 Mercury Milan which DH drives and I love.  I drive a 2002 Ford Taurus with almost 180,000 miles on it that is beyond over worked.  When we bought the Milan the intent was for him to drive it since he travels for work and me to drive the Taurus and then when the Taurus died I would get the Milan as a family car and we would get a small good on gas commuting car.  Now I have a lot of friends with babies and kids and they brag about their mini SUV's and how it is so important with the strollers and baby gear.  We aren't going to get another car before we plan on starting a family so I am trying to convince DH to look at mini SUV's.
Anyway-Do you think we should go with the commuter car and keep the plan or get a mini SUV?
and
Does anyone have any car recommendations? either way

Re: XP-car??

  • I have a kid. She has a lot of crap. That said, we've done just fine over the past 6 years with a small car. (We have a Toyota Corolla) We probably would have needed something a little bigger if we had 2 kids or more but we don't, so I am in Camp Commuter Car.

However, in the interest of full disclosure, we're getting a new car in December/January and I'm leaning toward a small SUV. BUT my daily driving consists of dropping the kid off at school and going to work, then back home. A total of 6 miles a day, round-trip so fuel economy is not my first priority. I need a larger car because I buy big sh!t at Homegoods and Christmas tree Shop all of the time, then scramble to find someone to pick it up for me. LOL

  • i am having a baby in september and my husband drives a car ('10 Subaru Legacy) and i drive small suv ('09 Nissan Rogue).. althought its good on gas and has nice trunk space.. I hate my car because of the blind spots. alot of small suv's have terrible blind spots. i also read some reviews on some convertible car sears that do not fit right in the nissan rogue... thank god he will be in the infant car seat in the nissan

we plan on getting a kia sorrento, ford escape.. i read great reviews on these cars... if we cant afford the gas (pending where i am working) we will get another subaru... i love my husbands car.

    btw- love your siggy pic!

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • I am team mini SUV or crossover (Subaru, Honda).  I would keep Milan as a commuter car for now.

We have a "monster truck" Dodge 1500 Hemi as our family car (gas sucks and is very high to get in pregnant), an Explorer (gas sucks but it was praticially free) we use for commuting/DH's work until he finds another work van.  We are getting a car in September but it is free and a gift so I can"t complain, it will fit 2 carseats and has good truck space.

  • Thanks for the input.  I was going to look into a Rogue, but now I don't know because the blind spots would drive me crazy.  The suburau's sound good and we are going to check those out today.  I love the Milan but I don't know if that will be good as our biggest car in the future.

  • My Husband has a 2007 - Jeep Grand Cherokee and was a godsend for our most recent move - I packed that thing to an inch of its life! Its big for me - being 5 feet - but I love it!!!!

I have a 2010 - VW CC - I love my car - however it is only a 2 seater in the back but the trunk is huge - when my lease is up we are going to look into getting another truck because commuting in the snow blowssssssssssssssssss

Also with Kiddies on the way we want some more room

And LOL @ Margie - I buy big stuff! <3

  • I have a 2011 rogue and the blind spots don't really bother me. I love the backup camera! I have a recaro convertible carseat in the back and it fits perfectly. The britax fit too. We have tried to fit a second carseat in and as long as you put one on each side of the backseat, they both fit.

  • do you commute far? If fuel economy  is a big issue for you then I would make that a priority. Mini SUVs obviously eat more gas but so would a V6 version of a commuter car. As far as kids they require a lot of crap to be lugged around with them but plenty of people do it in smaller cars. I would look into honda crv. they last forever and I havent had any issues with them like I have had with nissans. (I presently drive a 11 Honda Pilot -but its a full size suv -and I love it)

I would also stay away from cheaper/ less reliable cars Especially if you put a lot of miles on them. They will be cheaper but wont last as long as a more reliable SUV (honda, toyota) and you will have to start a new car payment when that one craps out. Does that make any sense?
