Lasik anyone?

It's been a while since I've posted on the boards, but I thought you ladies would have some experiences with this.

I'm considering having intralasik and I'd like to hear anyone's experiences, especially if you had it done in the Austin area. I'm a -4 in one eye and a -4.50 in the other with astigmatism. Both places I had consultations at said I would be a candidate.

What do you know about the differences between the visx 4 laser and the Allegretto laser? Has yours lasted you? Has anyone gotten lasik and gotten pregnant within the following month and if so, did it affect your vision? I'm considering Mann Eye with Lisa McIntire and Austin Eye with Dr Shannon Wong.

Thanks for your help Geeked

Re: Lasik anyone?

  • I just got Lasik in April and I love it. Unfortunately, I don't have the details on what laser was used. I went through TLC in the DC Metro area. Here is the email I sent to my future sister in law since she's getting nervous about her procedure in August. Sorry it's long! :)

The down time after the surgery is super quick. You could go back to work the next day, but I used it as an excuse to take Thursday and Friday off though ;) They do the surgeries on Thursdays and Tuesdays I think.  The surgery itself is really easy and it's not scary or anything. They're going to give you a valium anyway before you start so you'll be just chillin. They numb your eyes and then they put a little suction cup on your eye so that it doesn't move. This is the only part that you'll feel at all. It feels like someone is pushing on bruise ... it's a really faint achy feeling on your eye cause they're pushing on it. That part only takes like 20 seconds because they're just cutting the flap. Then they do the actual correction and that you can't feel at all. It's actually really interesting because they go around in circles and as they go around you can see your vision getting clearer. When they're all done you can mostly see it's just really watery cause they put goo in your eyes. Then your prescription is to go home and sleep for 3 hours. When I woke up from that nap I could see perfectly. When I went to my own eye doctor the next morning I had 20/20 vision. They're going to give you a thousand eye drops. Just make sure you use them all as directed and you shouldn't have a problem. I've only had two side effects that were in any way unpleasant. The first 2 1/2 weeks after surgery I had a fuzzy flap. Which is a rare thing where part of the flap they cut has a jagged edge while it's healing. It made it feel like I had a hair in my eye which was annoying because you can't rub your eyes. But, that went away after they fully healed (about 2 weeks after surgery).  The second thing is that in the morning I have to put drops in my eyes because they're dry from sleeping. They don't hurt, sting, or feel itchy they just feel dry. It actually helps me wake up a little bit cause the drops are nice and cool.

If I could go back I would still get lasik even if I knew I'd have these little issues.

  • I had mine 9 years ago and ended up with the dry eyes, which all in all isn't super bad - I got tear duct plugs and eyes aren't dry anymore! The pp post is really good, but I didn't get a valium and I went to TLC in CT.  It was freaky to be told to look at the laser light when I couldn't see the darn light, but it all worked well and I'm doing okay.  I'm just starting to see minimal changes in my eyesight from being close to 40, but VERY minimal (more like when the cats put their faces up to mine, they are blurry and before they weren't as blurry....VERY minimal in the grand scheme of things!).  It's wonderful to wake up afterwards and be able to see the clock!!!
