wtf post office?!

So, before H left we talked about me flying out to a port sometime around the halfway mark. About a month after he left, he told me that probably wouldn't happen since they weren't staying in ports long enough to justify a visit, so I didn't get my passport. Now he knows where they might stop next (all he told me is it's somewhere I want to visit) and apparently he has changed his mind so I'm scrambling to get the paperwork all together and sent in asap.

USPS requires an appointment with their passport office, so I've been trying to call on and off all day to make one but the number on the website is always busy. I tried calling a different office, always busy. The 1-800 number isn't any help. What the heeeeck?!

Re: wtf post office?!

  • Ahh, it was such a hassle getting my passport for our honeymoon! You have to make an appt. and most Saturdays are booked solid! Be careful where you get your passport pics done, we had ours done at Walmart ahead of the appt so we'd have everything ready and the dumb lady cut them crooked so the passport office wouldnt accept it and we had to run out and get em redone...redic! Good luck!!
  • You may just want to visit them and make an appt. I recommend the new one on Battlefield near the Expressway.

Yeah. I was hoping to make an appointment today for early next week, but I guess I'll have to drive out there twice since they don't live in the modern day where places of business have more than one phone line.

.....and while I'm in the area maybe I'll stop and get some froyo at Skinny Dip!

    Okay, what is Skinny Dip?

DH just got a passport in June.  He got to do it the easy was since it was for a deployment and it was still a pain.

  • Contact your local congressman. They can expedite the process and especially if you are a military spouse :) GL!

  • Do some super sleuth work. There may be an acceptance office near you that you don't know about. When I used to work at UCSD, they had a whole 40 hr./week position for someone to process passport applications (including taking pictures). They were not "the USPS" but they had a contract with them.

Edit: Also, make him tell you where you'll be going soon. What if you end up needing a visa that takes a while to get?

Really? Would I do that before or after submitting the application?

This whole passport process seems really complicated.

From what I understand, he isn't allowed to tell me until they are there.

I already had my passport photo taken and I filled out the application thing, I just need to turn it in.

And visas?! I didn't even know I might need one. If you can't tell, I've never been out of the U.S. Not even to Canada or Mexico!

I don't know how common it is to need an entry visa. The only place I've ever gone outside the continental US required one. I took my passport and paid a local travel agency to take it to the nearest embassy to get it for me. They (your DH) might already know that you don't need one for where you're going, or who knows it might be possible to deal with it when you get there. I'd mention it and see what he says. I'm sure he can find out. Or you might be able to ask the ombudsman.
