Buying yarn over the phone--LOL

I'm buying yarn over the phone. My mother (not a knitter, doesn't "get" it) is in a yarn store in CA. She is calling me in MA trying to describe yarn weights, fiber content, and yardage.
Now she has found a sweater in the shop that she wants me to make her. She is off to find a pattern so I know how much yarn she'll be buying me.
Thank goodness she has a nice and knowledgeable person at the shop!

If I need ribbon and I'm too lazy, I send my husband to Wal-Mart. He calls me and goes "but it says amethyst not purple." Then I spend 3 minutes verifiying what sizes I needed of each color, even though I wrote them all down and sent the only copy of the list with him.
(This only happens if I know the store will be busy and he's going anyways -- he walks faster than I do.)
