Couple more dog adoption questions
We're heading to another dog adoption event this weekend, I can hardly wait! In the mean time, I had a couple of additional questions for those who have adopted pets. First, how long did you look/how many pets did you interact with before choosing the one you would adopt?
Second, can anybody share recommendations for a good vet? We live in the Warehouse district downtown, so something somewhat central would be nice, but we'd be willing to go further out of necessary.
TIA!!
Re: Couple more dog adoption questions
We looked for about 5 months before adopting. This long time line is attributed to rescues not getting back to us rather than us not finding the right fit. We attended to adoption events and between the two probably interacted with about 3 pets. There was one that we were interested in but after zero response from the rescue we moved on.
I live somewhat in your area (right across the Hennepin Bridge). When we first adopted Hurley I contacted a good friend who was in Vet School at the U at the time and asked for her recommendation on a clinic. She said hands down, Kenwood Pet Clinic. It will be 3 years in November and we are very happy with them. We see Dr. Jeff Schulman (his mother is also a vet at the clinic) but have had appointments with others as well and been happy.
good luck!
I had been looking (not seriously) for over a year when we finally got Lucy. She was the first dog we put in an application for, and the only dog we met. It was love at first sight!
As for vets, we go to Como Park Animal Hospital off of Dale in St. Paul. So far I've been happy with all of the staff we've seen there, and we've been going there for about 4 years now for our animals.
I looked at our rescue's website every day for months until DH and I were seriously ready to adopt. We attended a meet and greet as well to get a feel for if we really wanted to go the puppy route or if a younger but housebroken dog was more our speed (we both grew up with dogs but we wanted to make sure we were ready to commit to high energy chewing and pooping puppy machines!).
We only met one dog - our current pupper because I fell in love with her. She was temporarily named my own name so I think it was a sign! We did a home visit with her foster mom one day and called the next to say we'd take her. She stayed with her foster mom for a few more weeks because we had a vacation planned (and hadn't expected things to work out so quickly!) and didn't want to uproot her only to throw off her new routine by leaving for a long weekend so we just visited her at her foster mom's in the interim. Once we got back from our trip, we took her home.
We stalked the Animal Humane Society website for a few months until we knew we were ready to adopt. We saw Puckett (well, Peter at the time) and knew we needed him. We played with him for half an hour or so, and were sold.
We go to Apache Animal Hospital on the recommendation of a few people and coworkers. They're fantastic, and super friendly/knowledgeable.

We use Animal Medical as well, and we love them. They have weekend appointments too, which is very convenient. We've done regular check-ups as well as calling with emergent/urgent things and they've always been very helpful!
Minneapolis Veterinary Hospital is right downtown on Washington Avenue - it's right by Bobby & Steve's in a new condo building with a pizza place and a liquor store. The vet techs are knowledgeable, the vet is a bit spacy sometimes but he really knows his stuff! He will push the leptospirosis vaccine down your throat (he's treated dogs with it), just to let you know.
We just perused petfinder and then found an actual golden retriever that was near where we lived (we lived in a smallish town at the time...), DH went to visit him. We paid for him, he was neutered and I picked him up two days later. We were pretty easy to please! And Rusty has been the best dog.
I just read this like 10 times trying to figure out why the vet would give you that vaccination? (Like to prove it's not harmful?) Then I realized you just meant he'd push it on you. I was so confused. :S
Interesting though. When we brought Puckett in last month for his year check-up, our vet really pushed this vaccination, too.
