I'm starting on my very first very simple crochet project, which basically consists of two chains - one that's supposed to be 160 chains and one that' supposed to be 300 chains. It's for a headband project, so the lengths are approximate, and I'm using the "wrong" hook (project calls for H or J, and I'm using I, because that's what I have).
Anyway, I haven't really done anything where I need to count stitches, and I have a nice long chain with no idea how many chains it contains. LOL!. Any approximate guesses as to how long a 160 chain and a 300 chain would be?
Also, I forgot to ask this on MM, but how to I end the chain so it doesn't unravel?

My Valentine Bookends (2~13~13, 2~15~09)
When I first started I was sort of so shocked it was working I just kept going for a bit to get the hang of it, and then I tried to count but kept losing my place. LOL! I'm such a n00b. My stitches are kind of all over the place at the moment, but my first chain is about 2 feet long.
Crap...I Mean Crafts
I do this with larger projects/projects with long chains. If you don't have the round stitch markers, you can use safety pins. You can get the stitch markers in just about any place that sells yarn/craft supplies.
Stitch counters are the best! With super long chains, I put them every 25 stitches or so. As I get closer to the end, I space them every 10.
