My garden was a bust this year. Our soil is terrible. So I'm thinking about doing a square foot garden closer to the house. Do any of you do this? What would you recommend? I thought about getting the book "Square Foot Gardening," but I didn't know if you knew of a website where I can get all the info I need to get started. I'm thinking about actually starting this soon to put my fall crops in. Thanks for any insight.
Also, I saw in another post that some of you get newsletters telling you what to plant for your region. How do you get them???
Re: square foot gardening
look up your state's ag extension. Mine has a nifty chart of when to plant what year round.
I have 6 4x4 sq. ft gardens. They are very good and I like having them so close to the house. I just pull weeds as I walk by, so it is never a chore.
Mel's mix is expensive to start. I'm actually thinking of switching methods. I've been reading up on layering old hay and planting in that (I'm not sure of the proper name).
Another Sq Ft Gardener here. I have three 3x3 beds and an assortment of planters for my garden. I don't have a tremendous amount of yard space, but we get just enough food for our family with my current setup.
You can order the book (Square Foot Gardening) online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I got my book from my local B&N bookstore.
I don't use Mel's mix. I just bought an organic garden soil brand, but I do add compost at the end of the growing season. My crops do just fine. So, my opinion is that you do whatever works best for you.
I tried my hand at Sq Ft Gardening this year, too. Everything is doing great, except I didn't build the cage to go around the garden and a rabbit/squirrel/gopher/bird ate my cucumbers, ytomatoes and beans before I could harvest. The pepper plants are just starting to get some peppers and my basil took off like crazy. I can't keep up with it.
I just planted some carrots for the fall, so we'll see how that goes.
