Hi Ladies! DH is finally agreeing to getting smartphones and getting rid of our landline. We've been with AT&T Wireless for years but are considering switching to Verizon. What smartphones would you recommend?
Ideally we would like to get the phones free or for a nominal amount when we sign a 2 year contract but from the Verizon website it seems like the "good phones" still cost $199+ even with the contract. Is it better to buy the phone at a retailer like Costco, Best Buy, etc. and then take it to Verizon and have them add the plan? Would that save money?
Just looking for any advice you ladies might have on the smartphone front, it's a little overwhelming to someone who's never looked at them before. :-)
Re: First Smartphone Purchase, Need Help!
We have VZW and I love them! Have never had an issue with them. We've also had REALLY good luck looking up online the phones we want, and then calling in and going through customer service, rather than going to a place. Most of the places work on commision, and will try to get you to spend more than you need to, and the over the phone people don't. I really like them better when I know if they make me mad I can just hang up and say screw you, VS dealing face to face. GL!
My SIL has the ThunderBolt and really seems to like it. I think I've heard other people say they like theirs, too.
I have the HTC Evo and really like it. We have Sprint service & have been happy with them.
I've had a Blackberry (Verizon) and a Palm Pre (Sprint) & never really loved either of those phones... I think a lot of it is getting comfortable with the functionality of the phone -- and finding the features that are most important to you. For example, I'm terrible about having a camera with me (ever) -- so I was looking for a phone with a better camera, because I'm most likely to get pictures that way. I also thought I HAD to have a physical keyboard, as I hated touch screen technology in the past...but I have been surprised by how much I really like using "Swype" on this Evo.
Like Victoria, I had always been really happy with Verizon. I'm only on Sprint now because we have a friend who works for them, so we're on his family/friends discount plan. (though we've been mostly happy with Sprint, too)
My one suggestion is to definitely go out to the stores (Verizon, Best Buy, kiosks, etc.) and actually try as many phones -- and their various functions -- as possible. Have a good idea of your priorities (physical keyboard? touchscreen? camera? prices for plans/data? wi fi hotspot capability? etc.) and use those priorities to help narrow down the choices.
Definitely go to the store to talk with someone. You will learn much more about the phones face to face vs. over the phone.
We also have Sprint and are very happy with them. I have an LG. It is my first smartphone and I really like it. I paid $20 for it when I signed up with my plan.
FWIW the people in the stores are just trying to do their jobs. They are not going to be pushy and make you buy something you don't want. They will show you all of your options from the free phones you can get and if you're interested, the more pricey ones.
