Hey Ladies... wow, its been a long time...

I have a question.

DH and I are going to Europe next year for our 5 year anniversary. We are renting a car and doing a sort of Euro Road Trip (14 countries)... Slovakia seems like it might be the hardest to get in and out of..... on to the dilemma, I'm really nervous about my passport. After we got married, I never bothered to send it in to have my name changed (because we are NOT world travelers so I figured, why bother?!?)... now with this trip we are planning, I am worried that I'll have issues crossing all the borders because my passport, in reality, isn't correct.

DH and I are arguing about it... he says as long as we have our marriage certificate it won't be a problem... but I take the stance of, we're in a foreign country and I'd rather change my name than risk being deported or whatever. Plus they may ask why I never changed it in 5 years. No reason other than being lazy... LOL.

What are your thoughts???

Re: Hey Ladies... wow, its been a long time...

  • I also want to add that I am googleing the information and coming up empty. Maybe I'm using the wrong search words...
  • Hi! I remember you from the knot a LONG time ago, my wedding was 1 week after yours 10-27-07!

I don't have an answer to your question, I don't even have a passport!  Having no knowledge on that I would have to agree with you and just get it changed before you go so you don't have any issues.

  • I would definitely change it.  Just my opinion for what it's worth.  It's too risky being abroad and not having correct papers/ID.
  • Might as well just get it changed, it will save you from future headaches if you need it besides on this trip. I wouldn't want to be carrying my marriage cert, it would just be another piece of paper to keep track of

How long of a trip is this? sounds like fun!

  • I remember it being really easy to change my name on my passport.  I think the most annoying part was having to get a new picture taken.  :)

If my memory serves me correctly, it didn't take very long either.  Maybe 2 weeks?  It's possible they just were super busy then, but the process was pretty painless.

  • I have been wrestling with this for the last few months.  DH and I are planning a trip to Maine in a few months and are thinking of heading into Canada for a day or two.  The general concensus that we came to was that there was no point in risking it.  Legally my name has been changed, therefor if they run my passport through the systems at the border, I worry that there would be some issues. I plan on getting my passport renewed ASAP...

I would suggest that you just get a new passport, especially because it's only $100 (ish) and you have a full year before you are planning on going.   I feel like this is a "better safe than sorry" issue...

  • Hey! You do have to get your passport changed to what your legal name is. I remember having to do this right after we got married because our honeymoon was booked with my new last name. It didn't take very long to get the new passports in. Plus, you don't want to have to take a copy of your marriage cert traveling. I believe your passport must reflect the name and address that is on your DL. If you have one, you can fill out a form to get it updated. I'm not sure on the cost because I had to apply for an entirely new passport since my old one expired.
  • It's not a big deal to change it on the passport, I would definitely do that and save the headache.

That being said I had the opposite problem on our honeymoon. I had already changed my passport, but our tickets were a wedding gift and in my maiden name. The issue came from my passport and ticket not matching up. I got into Greece fine without anyone saying anything, but coming home they gave me a hard time. Also, when I was younger (my parents are divorced) all my stuff was in my moms maiden name but it wasn't changed legally. Whenever we flew I had to use the name o the legal identification.  Your ticket and passport have to match up, that is most important. So if you are traveling by car I wouldn't see how it would be an issue. Just make your flights with your maiden name on them if you are too lazy to do the paperwork and have your passport changed.

  • We're going to be gone for 3 weeks.

Its just been this ongoing argument...  DH says save the money and I say better safe than sorry. LOL. Of all the silly things to argue about, he picks this one! LOL. I think he wants me to be held in a foreign country to get rid of me. LOL.. J/K

Really? With the amount of money is takes to go to Europe for 3 weeks he is worried about the $100 to change a passport? You have a whole year to save, I think you can manage.

I still haven't changed mine either, what I do when I travel abroad is just book everything in my maiden name. I haven't had any issues....they're not going to need any identification other than your passport so as long as that matches your tickets you will be fine.

BUT if you've already booked stuff in your married name or if that's not possible I would just go ahead and change it, it's going to be a pain for you every time you cross a border over there.

LMAO! I know, right?!?! Sometimes he makes my ears bleed. LOL.

  • I would absolutely change your name on the passport. If you don't, you'll have to book all your tickets/reservations etc in your maiden name. It's more of a hassle than it's worth!

I agree w/pp - since you are going to be gone for 3 weeks and you will be crossing SO many borders, I would say just get it changed. that way you don't have to worry about it.  better safe then sorry.

  • I would suggest posting this on the travel board to get more opinions if you're nervous, but if I was in your shoes, I'd save the $100 and just book everything in your maiden name.  Hey, $100 is $100!  As long as your ID matches the name on your plane ticket, no one is ever going to know what your legal name is.  People do this all the time.  You're not going to get deported, lol.
  • If it were me, I would definitely get a new one with your married name before you go.  While it may not be a problem with your old one, I wouldn't want to take a change of not having the correct identification in a foreign country.  The less stress, the better!

Sounds like an awesome trip.  Have fun!!

  • Have you already bought plane tickets?  If yes, then your passport has to match whatever name you got the tickets under.

Honestly, I would just pay to have the passport changed.  We went to the Bahamas in April and I booked the plane ticket in my maiden name and used my passport in my maiden name and it wasn't a big deal.  However since you have a year and you're traveling through so many locations, I would just get it changed and be done with it.  Then you don't have to worry about remembering which name you're supposed to use.

  • Just get it changed.  If not when you're going to Europe for three weeks, then when?  If you don't fix it then you're just setting yourself up to look suspicious at all those borders, including our own, and increasing your risk of at least being delayed.
